QEP Update: My Academic Pathway

The Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) Implementation Team is hard at work getting the college-approved QEP plan developed! As you may recall, the college selected MAP: My Academic Pathway as the QEP. MAP is an initiative to improve early academic advising to ensure that students are on the best pathway for their academic goals. While the QEP is a requirement of SACSCOC, it is also a terrific opportunity to identify areas we could improve to better serve students.

The team has met to identify processes, outcomes, and even the instruments we would use to assess incoming students' potential academic and career interests. The team is also examining the plans of other institutions to adopt and adapt effective practices for our own QEP.

We will keep you updated on our progress and we will solicit your feedback at key points in the QEP's development. As always, we welcome your suggestions and resource recommendations. Please feel free to contact a QEP Implementation Team member below to share your suggestions.

"Great Within the 58" Academic Excellence Award

Hunter Riggins

Hunter Riggins has been chosen as Central Carolina Community College's selection for "The Great Within the 58" academic excellence award sponsored by the North Carolina Community College System.

Riggins, of Sanford, is working toward an Associate Degree in Nursing. The daughter of Chris and Missy Riggins, she is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

Barbara Campbell, CCCC Nursing Department Chair, nominated Riggins. She points out Riggins' previous participation in the No Scare Fair for Children, as well as fund-raising events for Cystic Fibrosis and the Alzheimer's Association. Campbell noted that Riggins also has served her community by helping to build handicap ramps and participates in other events as a member of her church.

"Ms. Riggins demonstrates leadership within her nursing class. She often volunteers to help fellow students that are struggling with the required concepts," said Campbell. "In the Fall of 2015, the students were put into groups to research, prepare, and present teaching projects on nutrition. Ms. Riggins led her group, picking up the missing pieces for other group members, never complaining but striving forward to present an outstanding presentation for her peers.

"Ms. Riggins is the light in room. She always presents with a positive attitude that has an infectious outcome on her classmates as well as the faculty. She never presents herself in a negative way," said Campbell.

National TRiO Day

On Saturday, Feb. 20, CCCC's Upward Bound Math and Science students teamed up with Livingstone College's Upward Bound program for National TRiO Day! TRiO Day has been proclaimed as a national day of service which means participants of the program are encouraged to join together and give back to the community.

Together, students of UB and UBMS were charged with collecting donations such as crayons, books, composition notebooks, and letter blocks that were used to assemble several dozens of Early Childhood Literacy Kits for young children in Rowan County through Smart Start Rowan. Students and staff of TRiO then rolled up their sleeves and concluded the event with a group-wide, community trash pick-up. Students returned to Harnett County realizing that one small act done with great love and effort could change the lives of many!

Notes from Institutional Effectiveness & Research

In the Spring 2015 College Services Survey, many of you asked "What is Institutional Effectiveness & Research (IE/R)?!?" Great news! We're happy to fill you in on who we are and what we do! Here are our exciting IE/R tidbits for this month.

Project of the Month: SACSCOC Prospectuses
SACSCOC requires notification of any substantive changes (a significant modification or expansion in the nature and scope of CCCC). IE/R is working with outstanding partners across the college to finalize and submit prospectuses for: Building Construction Technology, Health & Fitness Science, and Therapeutic Massage! Pending SACSCOC and Department of Education approval, these programs will start in the 2016-2017 school year!

Current Training Opportunity: Assessment, Outcomes, & Compliance Assist
IE/R is providing tailored sessions on using Compliance Assist, doing assessment, and writing student learning outcomes or service area outcomes for reporters. The session goals include: explaining the importance of assessment, constructing student learning or service area outcomes, and creating an Outcomes and Assessment Plan and Report in Compliance Assist. Purchase Requisitions Deadline

Purchase requisitions for supplies, materials and equipment must be received by the Purchasing Office by April 1, 2016. All requests received after this time frame will be sent back to the Vice President for the requesting division. These requests will then be re-evaluated July 1, 2016, and if still required, items would be charged to the budgets for the new fiscal year and requisition re-submitted.

Departments should review recurring items that come up after the April 1 date (accreditation payments, renewals, membership dues, subscriptions, etc.) and submit a requisition for these items by the April 1 deadline. An estimated amount can be included, if an actual amount is not known at this time.

Please be sure requisitions contain part numbers for items being requested. Also, please confirm pricing and lead times for all items to make sure you will be able to receive them prior to the end of our fiscal year, which is June 30, 2016. All requisitions must show the 16 digit GL account number in the right hand corner of the requisition and include all signatures.

The Business Office requests that all items be received and invoices paid on or before June 23, 2016.

(Note: Individuals working with County and Grant Funds should contact Phillip Price, Starlene Jackson, or Tamara Joyner related to the cutoff of requisitions for those programs.)

PERSONNEL NOTES

Medical Fund

Hello everyone,

I'm sure by now that most of you have heard of Jonathan Loftis' illness. He is very sick with a severe case of pneumonia and is in the ICU. I have been keeping in contact with his wife Kelley, along with our friend Beckie, and we have set up a fundraising page to help the family with medical expenses. If this link could be shared amongst CCCC faculty and staff, that would be wonderful. Jonathan was such a big part of the college that I feel like this is something to be shared, even if no one can contribute. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers as he fights to get well and healthy again.
