What You’ll Learn

The pre-occupational therapy assistant program builds the academic and professional foundation needed to successfully enter the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) program and prepare for a career as an occupational therapy assistant. In the pre-occupational therapy assistant program, general education classes help students build the core skills needed to succeed in the OTA program and in clinical practice. Students develop a strong understanding of written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and basic math skills that support accurate documentation, clear patient instructions, and safe clinical decision-making. These courses also strengthen study skills, time management, and professional behaviors that are essential for keeping up with the academic and clinical demands of an OTA program.

The pre-occupational therapy assistant program is designed as a preparation track and does not lead to a degree. Students who decide not to pursue OTA will need to work with their Education Navigator to transition into a different degree pathway.

Accreditation Information

The Occupational Therapy Assistant Program at Central Carolina Community College is seeking accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) of the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA), located at 6116 Executive Boulevard, Suite 200, North Bethesda, MD 20852-4929. ACOTE’s telephone number, c/o AOTA, is (301) 652-AOTA.

The program must be granted Candidacy Status, complete a preaccreditation review, and undergo an on-site evaluation before being granted Accreditation Status. Graduates of the program will be eligible to sit for the national certification examination for the occupational therapy assistant administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT) only after the program has been granted Accreditation Status by ACOTE. After successful completion of this exam, the individual will be a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). In addition, all states require licensure in order to practice; however, state licenses are usually based on the results of the NBCOT Certification Examination.
