LILLINGTON - Thirteen Harnett County high school graduates and their families recently gathered to celebrate their completion of the Upward Bound Math and Science program, a TRiO program hosted by Central Carolina Community College in partnership with Harnett County Schools.

The graduation banquet, held on June 2 at the Harnett Health Sciences Center in Lillington, was a celebration of these students' hard work and perseverance throughout their time in high school and in the Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) program. All of the graduates have spent the past three or four years preparing for college with the help of the UBMS program. They have attended monthly Saturday workshops, attended intensive summer programs, toured numerous college campuses, participated in ACT and SAT courses, and completed professional internships. All 13 of the UBMS graduates will enroll in postsecondary education this fall to pursue a college degree.

The graduates are listed with their high school and future college: Glenda Benitez, Western Harnett High School (Central Carolina Community College); Chelsea Johnson, Overhills High School (East Texas Baptist University); Kayla Johnson, Overhills High School (University of North Carolina at Greensboro); Kiara Jones, Overhills High School (University of North Carolina at Greensboro); Katerina Marroquin, Overhills High School (Georgetown University); Samantha Medina, Harnett Central High School (Wake Technical Community College); Timothy Moore, Western Harnett High School (Chowan University); Leslly Rivera, Overhills High School (Appalachian State University); Craig Smith, Triton High School (East Carolina University); Skye Touchet, Overhills High School (Armstrong State University); Essence Truth, Overhills High School (Troy University); Tyra Williams, Triton High School (Fayetteville Technical Community College); and Trezivont Woods, Harnett Central High School (California University of Pennsylvania).

Ashley Tittemore, Executive Director of College Access Programs at CCCC, is extremely proud of all of the graduates. "Each of these students committed to a future in postsecondary education as a 9th or 10th grade student in high school and, by voluntarily joining UBMS, sacrificed many Saturdays and summers in order to prepare themselves for college to the best of their ability," said Tittemore. "Their hard work and dedication to their own futures is paying off, and our staff is so proud of all they have accomplished. We wish them all the best as they begin their journeys in college and will continue to cheer them on in the years ahead."
