PITTSBORO — A nonprofit based in Hillsborough is offering a $1,000 scholarship for students interested in Central Carolina Community College’s Sustainable Technologies program with an emphasis in sustainable design and practice concepts.
The scholarship was announced at the college’s Chatham County Campus, in Pittsboro, during the campus’s April 21 Earth Day celebration. EarthWalk Alliance President Tim Watson said his organization is “very interested in Earth stewardship” and decided to offer the scholarship as part of the group’s community outreach efforts.
“The purpose of this money is to provide for financial need by scholastically qualified students who are interested in the green technologies they can learn about here at CCCC,” Watson said. “We see this not only attracting students to the program, but also providing an incentive for students to do better work.”
While EarthWalk Alliance is headquartered about 30 miles from Pittsboro, Watson said the group decided to work with CCCC because of the college’s visibility in the realm of green and sustainable technologies.
“Frankly, the fact that this college has this wonderful program is what drew our attention,” Watson said, explaining that the EarthWalk Alliance hopes to make the scholarship funding an annual occurrence. “CCCC has a great reputation in this field.”
Laura Lauffer, Sustainable Technologies coordinator, said the scholarship is available to any student interested in the college’s Sustainable Technologies program. Information about the scholarship can be obtained by contacting Lauffer at (919) 545-8032 or at firstname.lastname@example.org
