SANFORD - Donors and scholarship recipients were recognized during the Central Carolina Community College Foundation Scholarship Luncheon on Wednesday, Nov. 20, at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic & Conference Center.
CCCC President Dr. Lisa M. Chapman expressed her appreciation to all donors. "This day means so much to our students who wouldn't be achieving their dreams with your generosity and support," said Dr. Chapman. "Each of you are not only helping change the lives of our students, but you also are bettering the communities in which we live in."
The Emcee for the event was Shannon Vickery, UNC-TV Director of Production Partnerships and Business Development.
"One thing I have learned is that stories, no matter how complete they may seem, can continue to evolve. The what may not change, but maybe the who or why will be different after a period of time," said Vickery. "Stories are constantly evolving, and that is the true message of the stories that you are going to hear today. Tales of amazing people who have chosen to take an action to change their stories ... an action that in all cases is tied to our community's college, Central Carolina Community College."
Guest speakers were scholarship recipients Megan Bullard, Justin Pedley, Jamar Butler, Jacqueline Aguirre-Delgado, Hope Geist, and Leela Rao.
Megan Bullard is an Associate of Arts major at CCCC. She plans to graduate this summer and transfer to a four-year college to work toward a Bachelor's degree in Hospitality for Event Planning. "When I learned about the scholarships offered, I jumped on the chance to apply and was fortunate enough to be a recipient," said Bullard. "Through the help of the two scholarships I received, my books and tuition for this fall and next spring semesters are covered, allowing me to save that money for the school I transfer to. ... I am truly grateful for this scholarship I have that will help me pursue my academic and future goals, eliminate stress and financial worries, and be able to pour into my community and college campus. Thank you."
Justin Pedley is a 2019 graduate of the Veterinary Medical Technology program. "The funds that I received from donors provided me with experiences that I would not have been able to be a part of," said Pedley. "Without the support and dedication of each and every donor in this room, I would not be standing in front of you all today. Your generous tidings have helped to shape and mold all of us here today and without you, many of our achievements would not be possible."
Jamar Butler is a member of the CCCC men's basketball team. "I am a very different student than I was just one year ago. I came to college with the best of intentions, but maybe not the best priority list. I was a basketball player who had to go to classes to wear a uniform," said Butler. "I'm now a student who is privileged to get to play the game he loves because I was able to find balance and set those priorities straight."
Jacqueline Aguirre-Delgado is studying for her Associate in Arts degree. "By receiving this scholarship, it gave me continued hope that if I continued to work hard, the sky was the limit," said Delgado. "So here I am today, proud of my journey and to celebrate all of my accomplishments as when I cross the stage in May 2021, I will be the first member of my family to receive a college degree."
Hope Geist noted her assistance from the Dream Keeper Fund. "Unfortunately, with one semester left, I had exhausted all allowed financial assistance from my Pell Grant which is where the Dream Keeper Fund came in to place," said Geist. "I was able to finish my classes and graduate with my Associate in Arts in May of 2017 all because of the funding I received."
Leela Rao is a graduate of the CCCC Veterinary Medical Technician program. "In a world of crippling student debt, CCCC counters that by offering many opportunities for those with limited funds, all in the effort to enable individuals the pursuit of higher education, skills training, and ultimately, living your career dreams," said Rao.
Tana Boerger, CCCC Foundation Director, provided the opening invocation.
Recognition of donors/recipients was by Lynda Turbeville, CCCC Foundation Chair, and Julian Philpott, CCCC Board of Trustees Chair.
The Foundation thus far has awarded over $240,000 in scholarships to over 250 students for the 2019-20 school year.
The meal was provided by CCCC's Central Carolina Culinary Institute, led by Chef Gregg Hamm.
The CCCC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with, but independent of, Central Carolina Community College. It receives donations of money and equipment on behalf of CCCC and uses them to promote the educational mission of the college and assist students through scholarships and grants.
"Today is all about stories. Stories right here in our community that are creating positive change for our neighbors, our friends, and our economy. Thank you to all of the donors here today for making the investment in the lives of our students and helping them change their own stories," said Dr. Emily Hare, Executive Director of the CCCC Foundation.
