Thirty-seven East Lee Middle School eighth graders learned about light energy, electronics and photonics, and how a laser works through lectures, demonstrations and labs during a two-hour Laser Workshop Dec. 16 at Central Carolina Community College’s Harnett County Campus. East Lee is the first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Academy in Lee County. The school and college are building a strong partnership to expose students to the college’s programs in those areas. December was the first joint activity and engineering was highlighted through the college’s Laser and Photonics program. The workshop was presented by Gary Beasley, Laser and Photonics lead instructor, and laser students David Nettleton, Jamie Yeatman, Andy Dawson, Skye Hoffman, Justin Chapman, Renee Sexton, David Mansfield, and Matthew Green.
