IN THIS ISSUE:

CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!

Congratulations March Employee of the Month:
Jack Oglesbee

Jack Oglesbee is one of the most committed and wonderful employees that I have had the privilege to work with during my tenure at the college. I believe that Jack embodies all of the qualities that make up our strategic plan.

Jack has increased learning in our environment by working hard to ensure that our classrooms and hallways are clean and inviting, which helps students focus. Additionally, we have seen a noticeable drop in student and faculty illness since he started cleaning for us. He is a definite people person that is beloved by the students and faculty, and he is always willing to listen and reach out to those in need. He exemplifies the quality of excellence with his extreme attention to detail and his commitment to putting his best effort into all tasks that he takes on or is assigned.

Jack also displays integrity in every action that he takes, and you can see it in regards to the cleanliness of our building and the relationship he has with students and staff. Jack is a fantastic communicator who is always willing to work with us and to come to us to discuss problems and offer solutions to troubles that we may be experiencing. Jack is always accessible and often volunteers himself to help with projects when he can. He is also innovative in the way that he problem solves, and has helped us with a few tricky maintenance issues that we have been experiencing in the building due to his unique viewpoints and insight. He is a true steward of the college, and strives to make our building pleasant, clean, and inviting to help potential students and other staff see how wonderful our college is.

As far as community goes, we feel that Jack is a part of our department's community, and so do the students. When he was switched to another building, the students undertook a massive petition campaign to keep him with us, because he means so much to us all. I would love to see Jack receive the nomination of Employee of the Month, because he is the single most dedicated and passionate individual I have had the pleasure of working for, and he truly deserves the recognition.

Jack Oglesbee

WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

CCCC receives $200,000 from the National Science Foundation

Congratulations to Andy McMahan and Jeff Gannon on receiving a $200,000 ATE Grant from the National Science Foundation.

Congratulations to Andy McMahan and Jeff Gannon on receiving a $200,000 ATE Grant from the National Science Foundation.

NSF's ATE program focuses on colleges that award two-year degrees in advanced technology fields and promotes improvements in the education of science and engineering technicians.

The goal of the CCCC project is to provide technician skills, competencies, and hands-on experiences needed for employment in the fields of energy efficiency verification and building performance analysis. The project will include the (1) recruitment of underrepresented populations into the program, (2) the bolstering of existing curriculum to incorporate industry recognized third-party credentials, and (3) internships and field experiences for students.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, buildings are responsible for almost 40% of energy consumed in the U.S. and close to 80% of that energy comes from CO2 emitting sources. Increasing the efficiency and performance of our built environment stands to play a vital role in combating one of the biggest challenge we face as a society. Andy and Jeff's project aims to think globally and act locally.

The program will run June 1, 2017 and ends May 31, 2020.

Scholars' Bowl Team Competes

Members of the TRiO Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS) Scholars' Bowl team competed in the North Carolina Council of Educational Opportunity Programs (NCCEOP) statewide Scholars' Bowl competition at Fayetteville State University on Saturday, March 12, and placed fourth out of eight teams.

In this competition, students answered trivia questions as a team and astounded the audience members with all that they know. They are looking forward to competing again next year.

While the team was in competition, 19 other UBMS students participated in a Leadership Conference and attended workshops on public speaking, financial literacy, and college admissions. All juniors were unable to attend this event because they were taking their first official SAT and demonstrating all they've learned from eight three-hour prep sessions throughout this year!

CCCC's Fourth Annual Holocaust Remembrance Event
Friday, April 21 from noon - 1:30 p.m.
Dennis Wicker Civic Center Lecture Hall and Lobby

Courtesy of The Center for Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Education of N.C., our guest is Dr. Debbie Long, the daughter of two Holocaust survivors who later spent years as refugees. She is a highly regarded speaker on the Holocaust who has spent decades unraveling her family's experience. Given her reputation and the number of speaking engagements she does each year, it's finally our turn at CCCC to welcome her. Additionally, the Center's founder and director, Sharon Halperin, will be part of the program.

We're working to have a loaned exhibit on display in the Lee Main Campus lobby again this year. (Thanks, Marcie and team!) This year's exhibit would be courtesy of the N.C. Holocaust Council and the American Friends of the Ghetto Fighters' Museum. We hope to display the "Triumph of Life" that commemorates the anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto uprising with 44 panels depicting Jewish resistance and survivor stories.
