SANFORD - Ken and Meg Moss of Sanford have established the Moss Boys Scholarship at Central Carolina Community College. The scholarship will primarily benefit students who have been in foster care.
"Education is so important! Ken and I feel blessed to be able to give in this small way to hopefully impact someone else's life who may not be as fortunate as we are," said Meg Moss. "The Moss Boys Scholarship is primarily aimed at helping a student who has been in foster care at some point in their life. We chose this as the qualification because we adopted three of our four boys through the foster care system."
Ken and Meg Moss have four sons - James, 17, Nathanael, 16, Cooper, 15, and Tucker, 12.
"We have seen first-hand that many foster children get moved from home to home, and it can take years for them to find a permanent family. We hope that this scholarship will help them in some small way to achieve their educational goals," said Meg Moss.
Meg Moss says that CCCC supports economic development in the growing region. "From the BioWorks program, to the Caterpillar welding apprenticeship program, everything that CCCC trains people to do equates to a better prepared workforce. CCCC offers an affordable option for students to reach beyond a high school diploma," she said. "The staff at the college go above and beyond to make sure the students feel supported. The grants department at the college makes sure that no student is in need. From the Cougar Market, to programs like JobCorps and Upward Bound, there are ample opportunities for people to obtain a higher level of education."
Dr. Emily C. Hare, Executive Director of the CCCC Foundation, said she is grateful for the generosity of the Moss family. "This scholarship is the first of its kind to support our students at CCCC who have been in the foster care system and/or were adopted. This helps us branch out to assist an even wider variety of students who need financial help during their time at CCCC. We are so grateful and honored that the Moss family is honoring their sons by changing the lives of our students," said Dr. Hare.
Lynda F. Turbeville, Chair of the CCCC Foundation Board of Directors, says, "I first met and respected Meg Moss through her position as Executive Director of the Sanford Area Chamber of Commerce and am pleased that we also became friends. Now in her position as Guardian ad Litem Supervisor, she continues to carry out her passion for improving the lives of others through helping young people. The Moss Boys Scholarship is an example of Meg's generous heart and spirit of giving. Her designation that students who have been part of the foster care system be given first priority really touched my heart. We are a better community for the presence of people like Meg Moss."
The CCCC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with, but independent of, the college. It receives donations of money and equipment on behalf of CCCC and uses them to promote the educational mission of the college and assist students through scholarships and grants.
