Kendall Crawford (left), Keith Lewis, and Bob Jones (back) were among a group of Sanford businessmen who recently donated their time and business knowledge to redesign the work area at Lee County Industries. LCI, Inc. participants, including Tim Garten (right), of Sanford, now have a work area similar to those used in business, allowing efficiency, increased production, and better inventory control. The men are at a horseshoe-shaped table where LCI participants each pack a different item in a row of boxes, a far more efficient method than each participant packing a whole box of different items by himself. LCI, a community rehabilitation program, serves more than 100 participants each year, training them in workplace skills and enabling them to earn a paycheck. Cathy Swindell, director of Industry Services for Central Carolina Community College, approached the businessmen about the need for the redesign and they volunteered to do it.
