Part-Time CCCC Employee of the Month!

March Part-Time
Employee of the Month: Evan Riley

"Evan is willing to serve both our BioWork continuing education course as well as using his expertise in the AAS degree program. He takes on new challenges like course development and values continual improvement. In the Downstream course, Evan created a capstone project, which gave students the opportunity to dive deep in project development for biopharma manufacturing. The examples and guidance he gave students resulted in a group project of exceptional quality. The project also opened students up to different roles in biopharma manufacturing and provided a broad, high-level perspective while at the same time digging deep into the details."

"Evan has been instrumental in bringing the Downstream Processing course to CCCC. Evan not only taught the Downstream course, which ran for the first time in many years this spring, he also developed the course by partnering closely with instructional designers at the college. Evan also identified learning objectives and content for a field trip to the Capstone Center and BTEC at N.C. State. Being willing to include field trips allows our students to gain experience and knowledge we don't currently have access to at our campus."

"His industry experience is clear in his teaching and adds so much value to student learning. Evan created a process for his teaching in BioWork where he reviews operational units frequently to connect past content with current content. He's continued this approach with the introductory unit in Downstream Processing and continues to work with our Instructional Design team to create a positive student experience. Evan also does an exceptional job with resume development with our students to assist students with job applications."

Evan Riley

Adjunct Professor in Biotechnology

How long have you worked for CCCC?
I have worked for CCCC about 1.5 years.

What brought you to CCCC?
I moved to the area and saw the college across the street from my house and decided I would try and apply. I am a consultant in the biomanufacturing field and thought it would be fun to teach the subject as well in my free time.

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I mostly teach the Biowork continuing education program to help students enter the biomanufacturing field. I recently developed a downstream processing course that focuses on a portion of this field where purification happens. Taking these courses allows people to work for companies such as Astellas or Pfizer here in the area.

Where did you grow up?
I was born and raised in W.Va. but moved to N.C. after college to start my career.

Where do you live now?
I currently live in Sanford.

Educational credentials?
I have a Master's in Biomanufacturing and will be completing my Master's in Business Administration this December. I also have over 12 years of bioscience experience in local facilities.

Tell us about your family!
I live here with my wife Alyssa Riley who is a lawyer that works for the local Pfizer, and a 9-year-old daughter. My mother also lives in Sanford and works for Pfizer as well. My father lives in Columbus, Ohio where he works as a tax auditor and urban farmer.

What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
Outside of teaching and consulting I enjoy gaming and competitive BBQ.

What super power would you most like to have?
I'll take the superpowers Steve Rogers got to become Captain America.

What is your favorite meal?
Beef Stroganoff. Hands down.

Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
I've enjoyed working with everyone and can't wait to make more friends in the Cougar family. Thank you all for the kindness and help you gave me over the past couple years. This is one of the few jobs I've had in life where I look forward to going in to work each time.

CCCC Employee of the Month!

April Full-Time
Employee of the Month: Amy Gustavson

"Servant leadership in always providing our CCCC students with CCCC resources and unwavering support. Mrs. Amy Gustavson is creative in continually identifying new ways to meet the needs of our students and faculty. She has acclimated with great grace learning the many different health science programs culture in efforts to help others in the best way possible. In doing so, she identified many creative opportunities for the students."

"She identified best study practices and scheduling practices for each different type of learner. In addition, last fall she organized exam cheer sessions to welcome and uplift students the morning before an exam and/or as they exited the exam rooms. Mrs. Amy has helped the students feel more confident that CCCC is a team and that numerous faculty and staff are here to guide them in completing their academic goals and dreams."

"Amy took it upon herself to get to know each health science trade by getting to know the faculty and their various roles here at the college. She asked questions and worked with my team in asking the faculty of how she can best support the students. Amy identified that students could use the additional support before labs or classes begin. The students really felt supported and they were very grateful for her generosity feeling more confident and organized for their academic/patient care day. I witnessed student gratefulness as they scrubbed in and gowned up for their lab sessions. The students were surprised that Mrs. Gustavson would take the time to provide confidence or support before an important practical day. The faculty were equally impressed by this act of kindness to support our nervous students on such an important day."

"It`s a special time for health science students as they begin to take their national licensing exams and pass. Amy volunteered her time to also prep the students for their exams. She researched and identified best study methods, learning styles, and test taking strategies to help provide student success. This week with each passing student score received, words of thanks for 'Mrs. G' are included when the students reflect on their journey here at CCCC."

Amy Gustavson
Success Coach, Health Sciences & Human Services

How long have you worked for CCCC?
It will be nine years in July!

What brought you to CCCC?
A good friend worked at Pitt Community College. She talked about her love of community colleges, her students, and her colleagues. I knew from hearing her experience that I really wanted to work at community college. The open door mission of community colleges to serve our fellow North Carolinians is at the heart of who I am. I think it's vital that we help people get from where they are to where they want to go!

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I'm a Success Coach for Health Sciences and Human Services. I support students with their academics (time management, study skills, test taking skills, etc.); career planning; life balance (balancing life/work/school, financial needs, financial emergencies, etc.); and answering questions about CCCC. I also cheer them on! I encourage students to reach out and ask if they have any questions. I work closely with faculty and staff in the health sciences, human services, bioprocessing, culinary, and library technology programs to support our students. I've learned a lot working with these programs!

Where did you grow up?
Tryon, North Carolina - It's a small town in the foothills of western North Carolina.

Where do you live now?
Cary

I have a Master's in Library Science from N.C. Central University and a B.A. in Arts Applications (think Arts Administration) from N.C. State.

Tell us about your family!
My husband and I will be married for 17 years in June. We met at N.C. State. We have an energetic 10-year-old son who loves running, math, and sloths.

What are some of your hobbies or other interests outside of CCCC?

My favorite coaster is Steel Vengeance at Cedar Point in Ohio. My favorite roller coaster design company is either RMC (Rocky Mountain Construction) or Intamin. And my favorite classic coaster is Jack Rabbit at Kennywood in Pa.

What superhero power would you most like to have?
Teleporting! I need to get places quickly.

Which actor would portray you in a movie about your life?
Tina Fey for sure!

What is your favorite meal?
This one is so tough! I'd probably say pizza or Mediterranean food.

Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
Thank you to all of my colleagues that I've worked with over many years. It's nice to work with people that want to help our students!

Part-Time CCCC Employee of the Month!

April Part-Time
Employee of the Month: Sharon Hawes

"Mrs. Sharon is ALWAYS friendly, warm, and goes above and beyond in her role."

"In our buildings, she makes sure items are in stock, certain doors are opened for us and lights are on to make it easier on arrival. If she is out on vacation or sick, as soon as I walk in the building...I know! Our whole department can tell. We realize how much she does for us and spoils us to make work that much easier, such as moving items around for our ease of access. Without asking, she will stock our rooms up. As an example in the COS and EST clinics, we use paper towels, soap, Windex, etc. Usually we'd have to ask and wait for delivery. Mrs. Sharon will come first thing in the morning, stock up our supplies, which usually we do or have students do, and place extras in our inventory for us. She is so helpful and things like that make our day so much easier and we appreciate it so much!"

"Sharon was such a huge help especially during COVID. COS and EST were one of the few departments in person and on campus during the start and heights of COVID. She was always helping. She would come often throughout the day, she would make sure everything was spotless, disinfected and stocked up."

"Sharon helped us with social distancing and within our department such as posting signs and closing and locking areas not permitted. All we had to do was ask or mention what we had to do and she was giving us a helping hand."

Sharon Hawes

Custodian

How long have you worked for CCCC?
I’ve been with the college for three years.

What brought you to CCCC?
After 34 years of working in healthcare, where I enjoyed meeting and helping others, I decided to continue my gift of helping people but in a smaller and educational setting.

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I ensure the daily cleanliness of the campus for a safer environment for the staff, students, and visitors.

Where did you grow up?
Sanford

Tell us about your family!
I have three daughters, which the oldest is a 2002 graduate of CCCC and now an Aetna/CVS Health employee. My middle daughter works for Lee County School System and the youngest is a director for a hospital in Hilton Head, S.C. I am also a proud grandmother of four, and a great-grandmother of four.

What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
I like to bake a variety of desserts. My most popular is homemade pound cakes and banana pudding. I enjoy spending time with family, friends, listening to music, exercising and softball.

What super power would you most like to have?
I would like to have the gift of telepathy.

Which actor would portray you in a movie about your life?
Alfre Woodard

What is your favorite meal?
My favorite meal is fried chicken, baked beans, potato salad and green beans, along with dessert.

Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
I am very thankful and grateful for this recognition and being a part of the Cougar team!

A Note of 'Spring Fling' Thanks

To the CCCC Family,

There are not enough words for me to adequately express my sincerest thanks to all of you for your help in supporting the three Spring Flings this past April. To those of you who were able to come out and volunteer for the event itself, thank you! To those who would ask "What can I help with?" Thank you! To those who allowed their students to come during class or encouraged their class to attend Spring Fling, thank you! To those who worked behind the scenes to help plan, strategize, and implement the events, thank you! To those who encouraged me to dream big and were willing to listen when I started with, "Okay, so hear me out. What if.....?" thank you!

I need you all to know that I could not do my job without YOU! So, thank you for all you do for our students and for supporting student activities. I am so excited to see what we can all accomplish together in the upcoming school year!

TRiO Student Support Services Honors TRiO Scholars

On April 13, the TRiO Student Support Services Staff, accompanied by Dean Jairo McMican, hosted a celebration lunch for the TRiO SSS student scholars who earned Fall 2021 President’s and Dean’s List honors. We were honored to celebrate seven President’s List and five Dean’s List scholars. The students were honored to be celebrated and continue to work hard on their academic goals.

Cooking on a Budget

On April 29, TRiO SSS hosted an event for students called “Cooking on a Budget.” The college’s very own Chef D. Atkinson taught the students how to make an egg roll in a bowl while using inexpensive ingredients. The purpose of the event was to teach students budgeting skills and cooking skills to be used in their everyday lives while using a minimum budget.

A presentation was also given to the students by Chef D. about ways to shop for inexpensive food, the use of financial programs, and ways to shop for healthier items while on a budget. The students made the deconstructed egg roll bowls from scratch and learned cooking skills in each step of the process from boiling the rice to cutting the carrots in a fancy “julienne” cut. We are very appreciative of Chef D. taking the time and effort to teach our students more valuable life skills.
