CCCC Employee of the Month!

October Full-Time Employee of the Month: Anna Hoel

"Anna goes above and beyond to serve both students and CCCC faculty/staff. She works compassionately with students to help them navigate the financial aid process. For example, one day a mother and son were very upset about the [Financial Aid] process; Anna took the time to help them work through it to the point that they came back later that day to personally thank her for her assistance.

"Anna is always willing to answer questions for a student and works with me as I am changing their program of study or changing their classes. This allows the student to get help from both offices without feeling like they are being passed around.

"Anna always provides the student with the most accurate information and has even contacted me if she has even noticed a mistake so the student has all the information they need to make an informed academic and financial decision. She makes sure that we have the latest flyers over in Admissions and always has a smile on her face when I see her.

"As a new employee, I know that Anna is always willing to help me even when I have questions beyond her job duties. She will help steer me in the right direction for resources. On several occasions, she will research a question that I asked to make sure I have the correct information. She is always friendly and happy to help."

Anna Hoel

4CNC Holiday Greetings

It's that time again! It's been several years since we updated our Holiday greetings. We have many new people who have not gone through the process before. We run these short Holiday greetings on the college cable channel, 4CNC, from Thanksgiving through New Year's. Samples are linked below!

Usually, you all come to the TV studios and record a short message. But due to the ongoing pandemic and COVID protocols for our industry, as well as some people still in remote work environments, we will be trying a new approach this year.

You will record your new greeting via Google Meet and then send me the recording. The TV students will add in a festive Holiday frame and some fake snow and not-fake Holiday music! Remember, we are looking for representation from all areas of the college (students, too!).

Follow these steps:

  1. Have your department head/chair decide on who will participate in your greeting – the more the merrier!
  2. Decide on a short script or song – something along the line of “The Broadcasting Production Technology Department would like to wish you and yours a very happy holiday season!” **** Note you are free to say Merry Christmas, but this does run through several holidays so a more inclusive Happy Holidays or Merry Christmas AND Happy Holidays is probably more appropriate.
  3. Pick a date! Set up a Google Meet through your Google Calendar and invite your teammates. Dress up, use props, have fun! Or don’t! Simple is fine, too.
  4. When you do the Meet HIT THE RECORD BUTTON!!!! When you are done it will stop the recording and save to your Google Drive. (Don’t fret! We will edit out the awkward beginning and end or any mess-ups in between)
  5. Share the Google link with me.

That’s it! Easy as Thanksgiving pie! Please share your recorded Google Drive link with me at klyle784@cccc.edu by Nov. 19. If you are an advisor to a student club or group, set one up for them, too!

Greetings from previous years:

Congratulations BILT Academy Cohort 2

Central Carolina Community College has been selected to participate in the Pathways to Innovation BILT Academy Cohort 2.

The BILT Academy is designed to assist community and technical colleges in their efforts to actively engage local business and industry in co-leading college programs through implementation of the Business & Industry Leadership Team (BILT) model.

Teams from 12 community colleges were selected.

The CCCC participation will focus on Biotechnology/Bioprocess Technology. The CCCC team will be comprised of Dr. Lisa Smelser (CCCC Lead Biotechnology Instructor), Dean Drew Goodson (CCCC Dean of Career and Technical Education), and Mr. Brad Mickey (Associate Director, Manufacturing, Astellas Gene Therapy).

Biotechnology is unique in that the lead instructor and faculty (full-time and adjunct) serve both continuing education, including BioWork, and the college credit program, Bioprocess Technology, and work closely with customized training programming.

The BILT model can help the college solicit more targeted and useful advice from industry, increase their participation in our programs and processes, and lead to guidance and support from industry that more meaningfully improves programs, specifically around what students learn, in ways that lead to better employment outcomes.

Health & Fitness Science Program

The Health & Fitness Science (HFS) program students work with VO₂ Max testing. VO₂ Max is the maximum (max) rate (V) of oxygen (O₂) your body is able to use during exercise.

Oxygen is a critical ingredient in the respiratory process that’s involved in breathing. As you breathe in oxygen, your lungs absorb and turn it into energy called adenosine triphosphate (ATP). ATP powers your cells and helps release the carbon dioxide (CO₂) that’s created during your respiratory process when you exhale.

The benefits are simple: The greater your VO₂ Max, the more oxygen your body can consume, and the more effectively your body can use that oxygen to generate the maximum amount of ATP energy. One student tested out with a VO₂ Max of 34.4 ml/kg/min. Through another calculation, we were able to establish he burned 226.8 calories during his 14 minutes on the treadmill.

New Intranet Link to Portal

In alignment with the CCCC strategic plan objective to increase employee satisfaction with communication, Objective Leads Robert Barnes and Trinity Fawcett have arranged to add a new Intranet link to the CCCC Portal. By adding this link to the portal login, they hope to streamline employee access to relevant information available there. The Intranet link provides access to staff announcements, the college calendar, and helpful files sorted by department.

Members of the strategic planning committee hope that this small change will help employees access important information, and will contribute to our efforts to improve employee satisfaction with communication.
