Full-Time Cougar Champion of the Month!

January Cougar Champion: Dr. Brenda Grubb

Dr. Grubb, first and foremost, creates a safe, inclusive learning environment for students focused on students first. Dr. Grubb participates in special projects with enthusiasm, attends extra technical training, and even suggests and leads additional related project activities like organizing a written publication. Specifically, Dr. Grubb has been instrumental in the department's use of the new Business and Industry Leadership Team (BILT) model for the advisory board.

She analyzed the BILT's Curriculum improvement recommendations and made a plan to integrate the recommendations into our Upstream Processing course. This implementation included setting up new equipment and developing new lessons to enhance student learning. Dr. Grubb is also involved with planning for the new Biotech Solutions Center projected to open in 2024.

Dr. Grubb visited Wake Tech CC and Pitt CC to learn from their new building projects and apply what was learned to the new Biotech Solutions Center. I can also count on Brenda to prep lab supplies for our evening adjunct and inform me of any supplies we need. Her organization is impeccable and appreciated. Dr. Grubb also contributes to solving complex advising recommendations to provide opportunity and access for students with full-time work schedules and appropriate Math and English placement. Dr. Grubb shows a great willingness to work with science faculty to keep shared spaces organized and safe. She's solution-focused to resolve schedule conflicts for our students participating in unique industry-specific learning opportunities. Dr. Grubb is an exemplary faculty-member at CCCC, and it's a joy to work with her!

Dr. Brenda Grubb
Biotechnology Instructor

How long have you worked for CCCC?
I have been at CCCC for a year and a half, since Fall 2021.

What brought you to CCCC?
I was impressed by the mission to put students first with transformative lifelong learning and the opportunities afforded to students that train through the programs at Central Carolina Community College. I was inspired to take on this role because I am passionate about making a difference in the lives of others.

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I play an essential role in developing and implementing workforce-oriented programs as a trainer for BioWork industry certificates and credit certificate programs, facilitating industry collaboration, stackable credentials, and compatible university transfer. I train students in preparation for positions in the growing Biomanufacturing industry in North Carolina and support the Associate's in Applied Science program, teaching four core classes required for the degree.

Where were you born?
Duplin County

Where did you grow up?
Beulaville, North Carolina

Where do you live now?
Sanford

Educational credentials?
I earned my Ph.D. in Molecular Genetics from George Washington University, Master of Education (MEd) from North Carolina State University, and a B.S. in Biology from East Carolina University.

Tell us about your family!
A few interesting things about my family. My mother is the 2018 Recipient of the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. Among other honors and achievements, she helped to establish the mental health system in several counties in North Carolina. One of my sisters is an artist and you can find her work in the North Carolina Art Museum. My other sister is in the film production industry and is the UPM on movies currently out on Hallmark and Lifetime and a new one coming out on Hulu soon. My brother is the Co-Founder and CMO of the digital marketing company, Content Monsta. My siblings do some really interesting things. Now that Biotechnology has become more of a common household topic in the past few years, I am a little more popular with my family and they actually want to hear about the science.

What are some of your hobbies or other interests outside of CCCC?
I enjoy gardening, spending time with family, and singing in my church choir.

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters and why?
One of my favorite fictional characters is the lovable little pig Wilbur from Charlotte's Web, my favorite book as a child. I grew up on a farm and I guess I could relate to the characters and my first pet was a pig.

What is your favorite meal?
I love a good steak, shrimp, fingerling potatoes and broccoli.

Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
I am honored to have been selected. I enjoy working with such a great team and it really feels good to be appreciated for the love and dedication I give my students and colleagues. It truly is my pleasure to work hard to help them succeed.

Part-Time Cougar Champion of the Month!

January Cougar Champion: Kathryn Brownfield

"Kathryn not only contributes to the student body in terms of teaching her class, but she promotes the college at her business as well as encourages the well being of all those around her.  She recently contributed to our online conference, Wellnessology, which provided three days of staff development programming.  Katie's sessions were attended from as far away as California as well as outside parties to the college here in North Carolina."

"Kathryn is a constant reminder of students in terms of wellness as she addresses all aspects of stress management and she permeates that teaching into their everyday routines as she offers advice to students who are about to take an exam or are facing everyday challenges."

Kathryn Brownfield

Yoga Instructor

How long have you worked for CCCC?
I started teaching at CCCC in the fall of 2019, shortly after I moved to N.C. from Los Angeles.

What brought you to CCCC?
The previous yoga teacher was a friend of mine and moved out of state. She referred me to take over her position and I am so grateful!

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I teach yoga! I teach primarily students, but I’m occasionally here on campus at the start of the semester for faculty and staff.

Where were you born and where did you grow up?
I was born in Iowa City, Iowa, and I grew up there in the heartland of America! I went to a smaller university about 90 miles away from home and then moved to Southern California after I graduated to escape the cold winters.

Where do you live now?
I live in between Sanford and Pittsboro, in a rural area in Chatham County.

Tell us about your family!
I am very close with my family back in Iowa, but I live with my mother and father-in-law, my husband, our 7-year-old son, Miles, and two dogs! It’s a full house and we have a lot of fun together!

What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
Some of the things I like to do besides yoga include reading (historical fiction, suspense, memoirs), vegetable gardening, and hiking. We recently hiked at Grandfather Mountain and that was amazing!

Who is one of your favorite fictional characters and why (from a favorite book, tv show, movie, etc.)?
I really really love this question. I’m going to go with Mila Pavlichenko from the book “The Diamond Eye” by Kate Quin. She’s a sharp shooter for the Russian army in WWII.

What is your favorite meal?
My favorite summer meal is fresh sweet corn with BLT’s, and my favorite winter meal is chili! I also really love sushi!

Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
I’m so grateful to work for such a great institution and with such an awesome team in HFS, led by the great Dr Bryan!

Moments with Paul is a powerfully spoken and sung retrospective on the life of African-American Paul Robeson, a 20th century Renaissance man. Learn about the life of this athlete, scholar, lawyer, actor, singer, and human, civil, and workers' rights activist. Robeson songs are interwoven throughout the stories and monologues. Before King dreamed, before Thurgood Marshall petitioned and Sidney Poitier emoted, before the big breakthroughs in Hollywood and Washington, before the Jim Crow signs came down, and before the Civil Rights banners went up, before Spike Lee, before Denzel Washington, before Jesse Jackson, there was Paul Robeson!

Cooking on a Budget

On Feb. 24, TRiO SSS hosted an event for students called “Cooking on a Budget.” In honor of Black History Month, the college’s very own Chef D. Atkinson taught the students how to create a soul food dish—fried green tomatoes covered with pickled collard greens, pecan roasted pimento cheese, and hot pepper jelly.

The purpose of the event was to teach students budgeting skills and cooking skills to be used in their everyday lives while using a minimum budget. The students worked in teams and had their own parts of the meal to make, which then all parts were combined. We are very appreciative of Chef D. taking the time and effort to teach our students more valuable life skills.

PERSONNEL NOTES

Featured Faculty: Crystal Sanders

Crystal Sanders is the Dr. Antonio S. Braithwaite School of Dental Hygiene and Dental Assisting Featured Faculty.

The second-year Dental Hygiene Coordinator has worked at CCCC since 2019. She grew up in Harnett County and now resides in Broadway.

“I enjoy the patient interactions and truly care for my patients,” said Crystal. “The smile, confidence, and appreciation received from the patient is my favorite part about being a hygienist.”

She says that if she could change one thing about the dental industry, it would be: “For dentistry to get back to a personal, connection-based field vs. the profit-based directions it’s going. For both the patients and the employees.”

Crystal has been married for 12 years and has three children – two sons and a daughter. In addition, the family has three dogs. Finding time to relax is at the top of her outside interest list. “Church, music, and thrift store and yard sale shopping are some of my other favorites,” she said.

Crystal has received the following educational credentials: North Carolina Wesleyan College – BSBA, Fayetteville Tech – RDH, and Community College of the Air Force – DA.

Thank You.

Thanks to everyone who shared a card, letter, text, email, or a simple emoji on Facebook in regards to my mother's death. Our family appreciates the Peace Lily as that will go in a proper spot to be displayed.

As community college employees, I like to share that my mother only had enough money to be at Campbell College (now known as Campbell University) for one year of a two-year program. That money was raised by her community as they recognized her talents and wanted to make sure she got some form of higher education. Mom went to the administration of Campbell College and pestered them to take all the classes in one year as that was all she could afford. They relented and she completed a two-year degree in one year. All this as she was considered handicapped at that time span due to her left small arm.

I share that to indicate that all of our roles here are very very important and each move we make can make an impact on future generations. I know Campbell made that impact for my mom and that resonated to me and I hope it does for my students. Thanks for thinking of my family at this time!

Dr. Carl Bryan, Health and Fitness Science Department Chair

COUGAR PETS

Cougar Pets News

Cougar Pets is a local animal rescue group housed on the Lee Main Campus. As part of the Veterinary Medical Technology program, our animals help teach veterinary technician students essential skills that will help future animals. All of the animals are rescued from shelters, and all are adoptable.

Meet Chenille

Cougar Pets

My name is Chenille!

I definitely win the "best all-around" award. Not only am I the softest cat, I am also a fun-loving girl who is up for anything! Of course, cat rules still apply, but I am great with anyone and everything. I would love to be a part of your family!

Meet Cardamom
Cougar Pets

My name is Cardamom!

When they say "blondes have more fun," it's true! I am the sweetest most fun-loving gal around. I love to go on walks with my people and relax in the sun for some ear scratches. I may even sneak a kiss or two under my favorite tree! I look forward to brightening your world!

All adoptable dogs and cats are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all vaccines. They have regular dental cleanings, blood work, and physical exams. We pride ourselves on the care that our cats and dogs receive during their stay. Contact www.cougarpets.org for more information on our colony dogs and available cats.
