CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!

Employee of the Month: Dawn Gregory

Employee of the Month

Dawn worked with the Lee County Health Department and organized a community baby shower event at the Civic Center on April 23rd. There were over 1,200 people in attendance with 458 expecting or new mothers. Thirty counties in NC were represented, with most coming from our service area. There were approximately 40 vendors, 70 grand prizes (car seats, pack and plays, etc.) and many additional prizes given out by the vendors. Students and vendors provided education regarding safety, growth and development, and car seat safety. Dawn worked with the Copy Center and Marketing, as well as did a lot of foot work visiting different places to gain sponsor support. This ended up being a huge outreach for the community and provided a lot of information regarding how CCCC is a vital part of the community. The event even made the front page of the newspaper!

Dawn worked tirelessly to coordinate a community baby shower for the people of this community. She had an amazing turnout: over 1,200 attendees! She worked 12-hour days and went out in the community to get donations and volunteers. I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this honor.

Dawn Gregory

ADN Instructor

How long have you worked for CCCC?
1 1/2 years. I started teaching at CCCC last January 2018.

What brought you to CCCC?
I began as a student in 2011 pursuing an Associate in Science mostly online while staying at home caring for my husband who was fighting cancer. This inevitable tragic experience in my life was the ultimate directional force that led me to the nursing profession. I continued with my educational pursuits with CCCC, completing my AAS, taking continuing education classes for CNA and Phlebotomy, and finally graduating with my ADN in 2015. After graduating with my BSN at UNCW, there was an opportunity to teach here at CCCC in the very program in which I had graduated just a few years prior. I was super excited as I felt I was returning home; however, I knew that I was beginning on a new adventure in life that I would not regret. I recently replied to a question in an interview for the Community Baby Shower event that we held this spring, I thought that becoming a RN was the best decision I had ever made in my life; but I was wrong. Teaching nursing is the best decision I have ever made.

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I would say that I am a nursing instructor for the ADN program, but I think the college, my colleagues, and especially the students do more for me than I could ever do for the college. To stop learning is to stop living. I may teach my students about nursing, determination, and pursuing dreams, but they continue to teach me about life, diversity, and a plethora of other things.

Where were you born?
I was born in North Miami Beach, Fla. which is probably why I love the beach so much.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in a very small town in Georgia. Lincolnton, GA--only had two red lights on opposite sides of town when I moved there eons ago (I think it only has three or four now); but it had a super football team (still does) and our coach had the most winning record in the state. Moving to a typical small town where everyone knows everyone else there, from the hustle and bustle of a huge city like Miami, was a huge culture shock, but I think this was definitely a major contributing factor on framing my personal values and belief system.

Educational credentials?
Associate in Science - CCCC
Associate in Nursing - CCCC
Bachelor in Nursing - UNCW
Master in Nursing - Duke University (starting this fall)

Where do you live now?
Buies Creek, NC.

Tell us about your family!
My father is deceased (2003), my mother lives in Georgia with her husband (he and I refer to him as my "stand-in" dad). I have three grown children, two girls and one boy. My two girls have blessed me with seven grandchildren and all of them live in Georgia close to where I grew up. All of my grandchildren have "J" names except for one! It can get pretty confusing. My son is in the service and is currently stationed in California. He is a Navy Corpsman and has been in the service for several years. I think I may have to wait a few more years for him to bless me with more grandchildren. I miss them all dearly and visit when I can. I love NC, so maybe I can talk them all into moving closer to me one day. I am hoping to visit them all again before I begin my Master's in the fall.

What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
I have many many interests; but I just can't seem to find the time to fit all of them into my schedule so I stick to my favorites. I love the ocean, so I try to spend as much time as I can at the coast. I love to travel to see new places and learn new things. I enjoy fishing, hunting, hiking, and other outdoorsy experiences. I also love books, trying new foods, roller coasters, and adventurous experiences. I also like art, crafts, cultural diversity, and oddities. My passion in nursing is babies, but I love it all.

What superhero power would you most like to have?
I would love to have Superman powers so I could fly fast and tirelessly to new destinations, and I could visit family and old friends more often!

Which actor would portray you in a movie about your life?
I had a tough time with this one because I don't really watch a lot of tv or movies. I think Julia Roberts would be my choice. After polling a few people including my children, my boyfriend, a colleague, and a student, I received the same answer from all but one. They all had different reasons, but the one I liked the most came from my daughter, who said, "I like the roles Julia has played, but I think you both have an infectious smile."

What is your favorite meal?
I am a foodie, always trying new and interesting things. Anything seafood is always a good go-to.

Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
I feel very blessed and grateful to have the opportunity to work with all the awesome people at CCCC!! Teaching is an incredible challenge that has pushed me once again from my comfort zone and has encouraged personal and professional growth. Thank you from the bottom of my heart to all of my previous instructors at CCCC who believed in me from the beginning of this incredible journey!

TRiO Celebrates Graduates

On May 7, TRiO Student Support Services hosted a banquet for this year's graduates at The Flame Steakhouse. Students and staff gathered to recognize the accomplishments of the 2019 graduates and to say, "Congratulations graduates!"

We were joined by our guest speaker Chris Wallace, a Fayetteville native and graduate of North Carolina A&T State University. Chris spent most of his formative years in one of the state's poorest and most crime-ridden communities. He lived primarily with his father, who abused drugs and alcohol and did not meet his mother until he was 16. Having overcoming adversity with the strength of a support system who believed in him, Chris went to earn two college degrees from N.C. A&T State University and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Chris educated, empowered, and inspired the graduates to persevere and overcome obstacles, because "they didn't come this far, just to come this far."

TRiO Upward Bound and TRiO Upward Bound Math and Science are federally funded programs through the U.S. Department of Education that provide specialized service for students who are low income or first-generation. If you know of a student that could benefit from our program's service, please refer them by emailing ub@cccc.edu or calling (919) 718-7576.

19th Annual Furniture Auction

The Central Carolina Community College Foundation continued its tradition of offering hand-made furniture and a variety of beautiful and useful items in wood and metal as it hosted its 19th Annual Furniture Auction on Saturday, June 1, at the CCCC Harnett Main Campus in Lillington.

Proceeds from the Auction help to provide financial aid for Harnett County students at the college through an endowed scholarship fund managed by the CCCC Foundation. The proceeds also pay for materials used to produce the auction items, which are created by students in the college's carpentry and welding classes.

I.D.E.A.L. - Inclusion, Diversity, & Equity Advocates Learning

The CCCC Student Equity Committee and Diversity Committee have partnered to create a team dedicated to diversity & equity education and advocacy. This group is actively working to:

  1. identify aspects of the current college culture and climate that may present barriers to inclusion for students, staff, and faculty,
  2. provide educational opportunities to increase awareness and understanding of marginalized populations in our community, and
  3. to strengthen and promote college practices that nurture inclusivity and equity.

Our dedicated group is currently creating an action plan on how to best offer training opportunities for staff, faculty, and students for Fall 2019. If this is something you might be interested in, please contact either Jairo McMican at jmcmi643@cccc.edu or Nora Burmeister at nburm777@cccc.edu. With your assistance, we will make CCCC the IDEAL place to be.

Student Success Questionnaire

A committee of faculty and staff from across the college have been working over the the past several months to create a "Student Success Questionnaire" for all incoming new students. This sub-committee of the NC GPS team is striving to identify obstacles impacting our students and assist in resolving them early on in their educational journey. Beginning in July 2019, new CCCC students will be asked to complete a "Student Success Questionnaire" as a part of the admissions and on-boarding process.

The questionnaire will gauge needs of students in areas such as: food insecurity, transportation, physical and mental health needs, financial needs, child care, housing, domestic violence, sexual assault, technology, and more. The questionnaire will be linked from the students CCCC Portal landing page. Once a student completes the survey, a Success Coach or other staff or faculty trained to respond will reach out to students to connect them to needed resources and services.

Many colleges around the country are beginning to implement intake surveys or success questionnaires such as this. We believe that by proactively connecting students to services and resources as soon as we are aware of the need, we will see long-term student success and retention increase.

If you have any questions about this new questionnaire, don't hesitate to reach out to Adam Wade at awade@cccc.edu.

QEP Corner: My Academic Pathway

Spring 2019 Success Council Meeting: Focus on Advising & Admissions

The Success Council met in Spring 2019 to provide feedback on MAP advising and admission initiatives. The group is comprised of CCCC students, staff, and faculty in Chatham, Harnett, and Lee counties. Mary Ann Aucompaugh, MAP Advising Chair, asked students to “create an ideal definition of an advisor” and to create a checklist of what good advisors do. Overwhelmingly, students wanted an advisor who is a problem solver, that they could trust, is encouraging, and makes time for students. Next, the group discussed a new Intake Survey from the MAP Admissions Team. The survey will be used to identify potential barriers to student success and to connect students with CCCC resources.

MAP Advising Team Updates

Based on feedback from students and advisors, the MAP Advising Team created a definition of advising at CCCC and a new advising job description!

CCCC’s Definition of Advising

Advising at Central Carolina Community College is defined as a collaborative process between advisor and advisee built on a mutual relationship of communication and respect. The purpose of this relationship is to help advisees achieve their full academic and individual potential.

CCCC’s Advising Job Description

  • Build a relationship with advisee to create a tether between student and institution.
    • Be available and open to the student.
  • Provide holistic, informed guidance to aid advisee in academic, career, and goal decisions.
    • Provide a support structure with motivation and encouragement as needed.
    • Provide accurate, relevant information to help the advisee make informed decisions.
    • Be prepared to help advisee define and develop academic and career goals.
  • Proactively communicate with advisee.

    CCCC Guided Pathways to Success

Guided Pathways to Success (GPS) is an opportunity to review and modify the way we organize student services support, advising, and our approaches to enhancing the teaching and learning environment. We will identify areas where we can simplify the process from admission to completion and remove barriers to maximize student success. The college was chosen as one of 17 colleges to participate in the statewide GPS cohort last year. A team of faculty and staff have been engaged in assessments and institutes to learn more about successful strategies being used across the country, and exploring how these could be implemented to help students at CCCC. We need your feedback for GPS! Complete this form to help inform the process.

    New Planning Council/Strategic Plan

Building on our college's amazing recent accomplishments, the Planning Council will set a future course that will continue to establish our college as a standard-bearer and role model in outstanding service to students and community. This year's strategic planning process will be informed by the CCCC Guided Pathways to Success (GPS) initiative that is currently under way nationally, statewide, and at CCCC.

Representing a meaningful shift from preparing students for college to preparing our college for students, the GPS Framework will help us facilitate a culture shift with a focus on removing barriers and maximizing student success. The four pillars of GPS will serve as the frame/lens for groups 2-5. The Planning Council groups are:

    1. Group 1: Determine Local Workforce Needs
    2. Group 2: Clarify Pathways to Student End Goal
    3. Group 3: Help Students Choose and Enter a Pathway
    4. Group 4: Help Students Stay on the Pathway
    5. Group 5: Ensure Students are Learning
    6. Group 6: Equity
