McGraw Hill Selects CCCC Faculty To Attend Symposium

Carl Bryan attended a McGraw Hill Education Symposium - Teaching and Technology: Personal Health in the Digital Age. The Symposium was located in Austin, Texas.

McGraw Hill selected Carl to attend via his work with the new online HEA 110 course the college provides. Twelve health educators from across the U.S. came to discuss adaptive learning in the classroom, health portfolios, and get a glimpse of evolving technologies at McGraw Hill.

There was a New Idea Competition where Carl's "Health Fair in a Box," a kinesthetic tool kit where students can administer a turn key health fair on their campus or virtually using an avatar, came in third place among participants.

CCCC Receives Additional Funding for Motheread Grant

Motheread is a grant-funded family literacy program for English language learners that operates under the College and Career Readiness Department in Harnett County. Classes for parents, childcare givers, and young children are offered off campus at Angier Baptist Church in Angier. The program helps adults as well as children learn to use the power of literacy in order to discover more about themselves, their families, and communities.

Harnett County Partnership for Children, the Motheread grant provider, reviewed and approved our request for additional funding of $5,000 in the Board of Directors meeting on Feb. 13. Motheread program has been very successful in the past and has provided a platform for CCCC's commitment to promote the significance and implication of family literacy in the community. The additional funding will definitely be helpful in the facilitation of much needed resources to improve and further enhance this program.

QEP Corner: My Academic Pathway

MAP Student Learning Outcome #3:

  • Each student will utilize career services and faculty advising to enhance timely progress toward goal completion.

2017-2018 SLO 3 Assessment Results:

  • 8% of first-time, full-time students used Career Services in 2017-2018.
  • 65% of full-time students were aware of Career Services. (Enrolled Curriculum Student Survey)
  • 71% of all graduates were aware of Career Services. (Graduate Survey)
  • 91% of full-time students were aware of Faculty Advising. (Enrolled Curriculum Student Survey)

MAP Spotlight: The Career Center

CCCC's Career Center plays an important role in My Academic Pathway! Here's the process:

  • First, students take a MAP: Embark Assessment, a combined assessment of career decision readiness and interest, as part of the admissions and enrollment process.
  • Next, students with the lowest career decision readiness are referred to a Career Counselor. CCCC's Career Counselor offers special, specific services related to career decision making and ensure the student has a higher career decision readiness.
  • Finally, once a student is ready for career and academic advising, the student is assigned to a Faculty Advisor.

Discovering Elvis: Tracing Traditions to the Soul of the King
Feb. 23 at 1 p.m.

Join us for an afternoon discussion on the King of Rock & Roll! "Discovering Elvis: Tracing Traditions to the Soul of the King" is the story of the discovery and rise to fame of this teenager from Tupelo that parallels the musical interaction between black and white communities defining American popular music from the early 1800s to the present day. Through background information on his youth, along with the important contributions of Memphians such as Dewey and Sam Phillips, North Carolina Humanities Council Road Scholar Billy Stevens puts the social and historic context of Elvis' remarkable success into perspective. This event is free and open to the public and is made possible with funding from the North Carolina Humanities Council.

Author Event: Andy Reynolds
March 2 at 1 p.m.

Chatham Community Library will host Andrew Reynolds, author of The Children of Harvey Milk: How LGBTQ Politicians Changed the World, on Saturday, March 2, from 1 - 3 p.m. Part political thriller, part meditation on social change, part love story, The Children of Harvey Milk tells the epic stories of courageous men and women around the world who came forward to make their voices heard during the struggle for equal rights. Featuring LGBTQ icons from America to Ireland, Britain to New Zealand, Reynolds documents their successes and failures, heartwarming stories of acceptance and heartbreaking stories of ostracism, demonstrating the ways in which an individual can change the views and voting behaviors of those around them. The book also includes rare vignettes of LGBTQ leaders in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean who continue to fight for equality in spite of threats, violence, and homophobia. A touchstone narrative of the tumultuous journey towards LGBTQ rights, The Children of Harvey Milk is a must-read for anyone with an interest in social change.

Mr. Reynolds is a professor, writer, and activist originally from London, England. He has been a professor of political science at UNC-Chapel Hill since 2001. He founded and directs the UNC LGBTQ Representation and Rights Research Initiative, the leading global think tank focused on LGBTQ politics. His work has been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, Guardian, New Statesman, and widely online. His 12 non-fiction books range from African politics to the Arab Spring, elections to the future of democracy. For 25 years he has been an advisor on democratic design in the world's most dangerous places, including South Africa, Somalia, Afghanistan, Libya, Burma, and Ukraine.

Author Event: Iris Yang
March 16 at 2 p.m.

Chatham Community Library will host an author event with Iris Yang on March 16 at 2 p.m. Iris Yang, Ph.D. (Qing Yang) was born and raised in China. She has loved reading and writing since she was a child, but in China creative writing was a dangerous career. As famous writers and translators, her grandmother and her aunt were wrongfully accused as counter-revolutionary Rightists, so Iris had to choose a safer path - studying science.

After graduating from Wuhan University and passing a series of exams, she was accepted by the prestigious CUSBEA (China-United States Biochemistry Examination and Application program). At age 23, with poor English, little knowledge of the country, and 500 borrowed dollars, she came to the United States as a graduate student at the University of Rochester. Later, she received a Ph.D. in molecular biology, trained as a postdoctoral fellow at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and worked at the University of North Carolina. Although she has published a number of scientific papers, she has a passion for creative writing, and her short stories have won contests and have been published in anthologies. Her debut novel, Wings of a Flying Tiger, was published in June 2018, and its sequel, Will of a Tiger, was published in January 2019.

Meet a few of the cats in the colony.

All adoptable cats and dogs are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and up-to-date on all vaccines. They have had regular dental cleanings, blood work, and physical exams. We pride ourselves on the care that our cats and dogs receive during their stay. Contact us at www.cougarpets.org for more information on our colony cats and available dogs.
