SANFORD - Gladys Yessinia Alvarez, of Sanford, is Central Carolina Community College's nominee for the Dallas Herring Achievement Award.

The award is established by the North Carolina Community College System to honor the late Dr. Dallas Herring, whose philosophy of "taking people where they are and carrying them as far as they can go" is the guiding principle of the system. The award is given annually to a current or former community college student who best embodies Dr. Herring's philosophy.

Alvarez, an Associate in Arts student at Central Carolina Community College, is planning on transferring to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for a program and future profession in global studies.

"Gladys' love of learning and her belief in its ability to better one personally and professionally led her to encourage cousins and classmates to pursue their study alongside her at our community college," said Bianka Stumpf, CCCC Social Sciences Lead Instructor. "She is a de facto ambassador for our community college and system."
