Southern Lee awarded CCCC President’s Cup

02.19.2013 • College & Community, Special Events

SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College awarded its President's Cup for 2013 to Southern Lee High School in a ceremony at the college's Feb. 8 Information and Planning Conference luncheon at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center.

The cup is presented annually to the high school in the college's service area of Chatham, Harnett and Lee counties with the highest percentage of the previous year's graduates continuing their education at CCCC.

Of Southern Lee's graduates in 2012, 41 students - 17.52 percent - enrolled at the college. Other high schools with double-digit CCCC enrollments from the Class of 2012 were: Chatham Central, 19 students - 17.43 percent; Lee County, 56 students -16.91 percent; Western Harnett, 36 students -13.79 percent; and Northwood, 29 students - 12.23 percent.

CCCC Executive Vice President for Instruction Lisa Chapman and Dean of Vocational and Technical Programs Stephen Athans presented the President's Cup to Southern Lee Principal Bonnie Almond.

"The community college is a great place for kids to start," Almond said. "A lot of them don't know what they want to do. Going to the community college enables them to get college credits while they are identifying their areas of interest."

The IPC, held annually, introduces high school principals, counselors, career-technical education coordinators and career development coordinators to what the college offers their schools' graduates. The workshop portion of the 2013 event was held at the college's Emergency Services Training Center, where the administrators took part in hands-on experiences with some of the first responder training programs offered.

"Central Carolina Community College offers high quality vocational and university transfer programs close to students' homes at a fraction of the cost of going directly to a four-year college or university," said Bobby Wicker, CCCC director of recruitment. "This award is one way we recognize the close relationships we have with area high schools in seeing that our youth are well prepared to enter the workforce or go on to a university."

The President's Cup is a handsome, multicolored ceramic bowl, about 12 inches in diameter, created by Joyce Bryan, ceramics instructor in the college's Associate in Fine Arts degree program. Bryan is also a professional potter with her own business, Stone Crow Pottery, in Pittsboro.
