CCCC arts program offers college transfer classes

SILER CITY - Want to bring out your individual creativity and earn college transfer credits at the same time?

Central Carolina Community College's Professional Arts and Crafts: Sculpture program is now providing that opportunity with ceramics and sculpture classes that earn university transfer credit as Humanities program electives.

These classes are open to all students who want to challenge themselves in a new area of study that inspires creativity. Students work hands-on with the materials, enjoying a therapeutic break from the rigors of a full-time course load. No prior experience in sculpture or ceramics is needed.

In ART 283, Ceramics I, students learn the basics of working with clay, focusing primarily on throwing clay on the wheel, with some hand building. In ART 281, Sculpture I, students learn beginning sculpture with a variety of different materials and methods. These include carving stone, constructing with wood and/or found objects, as well as working with armatures.

"Students may come with diverse backgrounds and experience levels," said Phil Ashe, CCCC Sculpture Studio lead instructor. "No one should be reluctant to take these classes for fear of failure; hard work and effort are the main criteria for grading."

The classes are located at the college's Sculpture and Pottery Studio, 138 N. Chatham St., in Siler City.
