03.04.2011 • Arts & Entertainment, College & Community

PITTSBORO – Two nationally recognized speakers on sustainability and economic development share their experiences and wisdom at a March 10 Central Carolina Community College Green Central Speaker Series.

Nancy Murray, CEO and co-founder of Builders of Hope, and Wanda Urbanska, author and host of the PBS television series “Simple Living with Wanda Urbanska,” will speak at the 7 p.m. program in the Mary Holmes Meeting Room of the Chatham Community Library on the college’s Chatham County Campus, 764 West St., Pittsboro.

The hour-long presentation, “Applied Principles of Sustainability – Economic Growth and Job Creation,” will include a question-and-answer session. A coffee and cookies reception will follow. Program admission is free, but come early, as seating is limited to 150.

Murray will address this topic by discussing Builders of Hope, explaining the original vision, evolution, and future prospects for her business. Urbanska will address the topic from a more personal point of view, discussing the pathways to sustainability from an individual perspective.

Builders of Hope operates in markets from Raleigh to New Orleans, acquiring and relocating houses that are slated for demolition and disposal. These houses are then renovated with sustainable practices, creating homes that are energy efficient with reduced indoor air pollutants. The homes are then sold at competitive prices for workforce housing.

In addition to restoring homes and revitalizing communities, Builders of Hope helps restore and revitalize the lives of people in those communities. It removes traditional barriers to employment that they face and creates training and educational opportunities, resulting in new jobs. Learn more about the organization at www.buildersofhope.org.

Urbanska is an advocate for green and simple living. She has authored several books and created a PBS television series, “Simple Living with Wanda Urbanska.” She was featured in Natural Living Magazine describing her own green home renovation of a traditional brick ranch.
