SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College is now offering Bioprocess Technology and BioWork programming.

The Bioprocess Technology program offers hybrid/blended and online courses. Face-to-face hands-on lab hours (day and evening) combined with online learning provides maximum flexibility.

"The revamped Bioprocess Technology program is being designed with a high level of flexibility and personalized advising to support students every step of the way," said Dr. Lisa Smelser, CCCC Lead Instructor for Biotechnology Programs. "We encourage people who have a passion for helping others by making life-saving medicines to enroll in BioWork."

The Bioprocess Technology curriculum is designed to prepare individuals to work as process operators in biological products manufacturing facilities. Students will combine basic science and communication skills, manufacturing technologies, and good manufacturing practices in the course of study.

Students will be expected to develop a strong basic science foundation with a sound understanding of the major technologies employed in the industry. They also will be expected to develop a collaborative and disciplined work ethic while consistently practicing problem-solving skills.

Upon successful completion of the program, individuals should possess the necessary skills to qualify for employment in a variety of Bioprocessing industries.

Drew M. Goodson, CCCC Dean of Career and Technical Education, said: "The life sciences field is growing locally, especially in the area of bio-pharmaceutical manufacturing. CCCC is excited to restart our Bioprocess Technology Program and BioWork Certification course that will help supply local industry with employees and provide jobs that offer a family sustaining wage for our graduates."

The BioWork industry credential provides a foundation for a career as a Bioprocess Technician with local and regional biopharmaceutical companies. Offering credit for BioWork creates a clear, seamless path into the new Bioprocess Technology degree program. Central Carolina's AAS in Bioprocess Technology will provide current employees the opportunity to qualify for promotions as well as provide the theoretical background and hands-on experience for community members seeking a career in biopharmaceutical manufacturing.
