Student Spotlight

Students’ success is an important indicator of MAP’s success. Education Department Chair and advisor Ginger Bartholomew Harris interviewed one of her students to learn about her experience with MAP.

Q&A with Grace McAlister

Early Childhood Education with a licensure

Advisor: Ginger Bartholomew Harris

  • How long have you been at CCCC?

Answer: I am starting my second year at CCCC.

  • What has been your experience with your Academic Advisor and the QEP, and how have they helped you with your program major and overall with steering you career-wise?

Answer: CCCC has incredible advisors and faculty members. There have been multiple advisors and professors that have poured into my life and steered me academically to see the best way to reach my goals post college.

  • What are your career goals?

Answer: To build relationships with children and help them grow and meet their potential. I want children to know that they are loved and valued even if their family does not show them love. I aspire to work for a foster or adoption organization and help children navigate the system. I would also like to spend several years teaching in a classroom.

  • What was your prior major? How long were you in that program?

Answer: Paralegal degree. I completed one semester of the paralegal law program.

  • What made you switch to your current major?

Answer: I went into college wanting to work with children going through the foster care and adoption systems. I went into the paralegal program in order to earn a degree that I could use for the law side of foster care and adoption. But after talking to and receiving advice from my professors, I learned that I would have no personal relationship with the kids while being a paralegal. I really want to build relationships with children who are struggling in the foster care system and so I switched my major to early childhood education and am preparing to transfer to a university for a major in elementary education.

  • What type of activities are you involved in at CCCC?

Answer: I play on the Central Carolina volleyball team and I am the president of the Cru club on campus.

  • Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

Answer: In five years I see myself having graduated from a university with a bachelors in elementary ed. I hope to be working in an elementary school and gaining experience to transfer to working for a foster or adoption facility in some capacity.

  • What do you feel that CCCC could have done differently to guide you when you first enrolled? What changes have you seen since you started that you could have benefited from?

Answer: I don’t think CCCC should have done anything differently with guiding me in enrollment. Switching from law to education is truly something I had to decide based on my own experience and conversations with professors. The faculty at CCCC is incredible and I could not be more thankful for their support, advice and kindness.

MAP Tools for Faculty & Staff

Our amazing MAP: My Academic Pathway team members and volunteers have created resources to help our faculty, staff, and students. Check out these resources used in Admissions, Advising, and ACA courses.:

MAP Team Reports

ACA Team

In September 2020, the MAP ACA Team distributed the My Success Checklist to students in ACA 122. This team is also planning how to automate the checklist in the Aviso. This will become the MAP: Passport from Action 7 of the QEP.

In Spring 2020, the MAP ACA Team began creating a fully online ACA 122 shell, developed an 8-week ACA 122 course to accommodate the small class sizes needed in response to COVID-19, and held the first ACA Advisory Board meeting with CCCC and NCCCS faculty members.

Admissions Team

In Summer 2020, the MAP Admissions Team updated the CCCC Program Information Sheets to reflect changes in curriculum and continuing education programs. The team also added Program Information Sheets to every program website in February 2020. The sheets include a program overview, key industry information, RIASEC code, and additional program information.

The MAP Admissions Team is planning a Fall 2020 training and check-in meeting for the Developmental Faculty Advisors and Career Counselor. They will provide a training session for new Developmental Faculty Advisors, discuss how the referral process is going, and how to best support referred students.

Advising Team

The Advising Team is creating a definition of advising at CCCC and reviewing advising job duties. The goal is to create a baseline standard for University Transfer and Career and Technical Education advising. They are also revising the Foundations of Advising course based on advisor feedback. The current course will be split into one course for new advisors and a second course for established advisors. The revised advising courses will be piloted in Fall 2019 and go live in Spring 2019.

The MAP Advising Team hosts a series of 30-minute drop-in advising trainings via Blackboard Collaborate. The "Advising Short Sessions" include a 15-minute presentation and 15 minutes of Q&A with attendees. The live sessions are recorded for later viewing and topics are selected by CCCC advisors. The Fall 2020 Advising Short Sessions include:

As of July 2020, over 100 advisors have completed the Foundations of Advising (advisor training) course! That’s over 50% of our faculty and staff advisors! The Blackboard course is self-paced and exposes advisors to a variety of resources and opportunities to reflect on their advising skills and philosophy.

Assessment Team

The MAP Marketing Team welcomes Nick Testa, LEC Liaison/Early College Coordinator, as the new chair of the MAP Marketing Team! We sincerely thank Summerlin Webb for all her hard work with the MAP Marketing Team. Her leadership on the MAP Refuel event, the My Success Checklist, and the Students Services handouts were greatly appreciated!

The Marketing Team worked with the Marketing Department to develop a RIASEC handout for use by advisors, employees, and students. It explains each of the six RIASEC areas and their connections to CCCC academic programs. The handout was revealed at the October "Advising Short Session" professional development meeting.

In June 2020, the MAP Marketing Team met to develop a new marketing video and plan marketing updates for 2020-21. The new MAP marketing video introduces the three-step process students experience in MAP, includes CCCC employee interviews from the three MAP areas, and highlights data from each area. They also planned how to automate the My Success Checklist in Aviso. This will help created the MAP: Passport from Action 7 of the QEP.

Success Council

The MAP Success Council is planning student focus groups for current ACA 122 students and soon-to-be graduating students. The ACA 122 focus group will take place at the end of the Fall 2020 semester. The soon-to-be graduating students will meet in Spring 2021. Both focus groups will examine students’ experiences with MAP. One will look at the early experience and the other will look at their entire CCCC experience using MAP: My Academic Pathway.
