Students’ success is an important indicator of M.A.P.’s success. English instructor and advisor Shawna Jones interviewed one of her students to learn about his experience with M.A.P.

Q&A with Jack Vail

Advisor: Shawna Jones

  • How long have you been at CCCC?

    Answer: I have been a student here at CCCC on and off since Fall of 2018.

  • What are your career goals?

    Answer: My goals are to finish my AA here at CCCC before transferring to NC State to complete my Bachelor's and Master's degrees in History. From there, I intend to teach History at a collegiate level.

  • What made you choose the AA program?

    Answer: I have never been much of a fan of science, though that is not the only reason. The AA program provided me with options that would assist me in my long-term goals without too many unnecessary courses. Basically, I want every class I take to be beneficial in the long run.

  • What has been your experience with your Academic Advisor and the QEP, and how have they helped you with your program major and overall with steering you career-wise?

    Answer: I just recently switched to AA, so my advisor hasn't been working with me for very long. However, she immediately assisted me in preparing an academic plan for my time here and at NC State. She has also assisted me in looking for scholarships and involvement that would assist me in completing my goals. Overall, she has done an incredible job!

  • Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

    Answer: I see myself graduating with my Bachelor's and hopefully Master's from NC State. From there, my wife and I intend to move to another state or possibly country to pursue success in both of our fields.

  • What do you feel that CCCC could have done differently to guide you when you first enrolled? What changes have you seen since you started that you could have benefited from?

    Answer: I haven't had any issues from CCCC or the staff. I have noticed an increased productivity with advisors and success coaches that definitely provides support and guidance that new students need for success.

  • When do you feel that the advising you received should be offered to new students?

    Answer: I feel as though advising should be offered almost immediately. Though I am a bit older, many fresh students are here out of high school. It is essential that all students be provided with assistance throughout their time at CCCC in order to discern and pursue whatever dream they hope to achieve.

M.A.P. Refuel Event is a Success! by Summerlin Webb

During the second week of classes, students were treated to mochas and delicious shortbread cookies at our M.A.P. Refuel events on the Lee, Harnett and Chatham campuses. In addition to the caffeine and tasty treats provided by Chef Hamm and the Culinary Department, students were given a map of their campus with a list of student resources and their hours and contact information along with a Student Success Checklist. It is a checklist for students to follow in each semester to ensure they stay on their pathways and complete tasks necessary for a good academic journey (visiting their advisor, registering on time, completing the FAFSA, submitting their graduation application, etc.). Students were excited to receive the treats and handouts. As one student said at the Lee Campus event, "This is the best day ever. A Monday, and I get mocha and cookies?!"

M.A.P. Team Reports

ACA Team

The M.A.P. ACA Team chair, Seth Buchanan, and M.A.P. Advising Team chair, Maryann Aucompaugh, provided a M.A.P. professional development session to CCCC advisors on October 11, 2019. They updated advisors on the way advising is taught in ACA 122.

Admissions Team

In October, the M.A.P. Admissions Team did focus groups with students who were referred to Developmental Faculty Member or a Career Counselor to get career support. They have plans to improve the referral process based on students’ feedback. Upon enrollment, students take the Embark: Career Interest Inventory. The Career Decision Inventory (CDI) portion of the assessment identifies a student’s confidence with their career choice. If they’re not confident, they work with a Developmental Faculty Member or a Career Counselor to have more in-depth career conversations.

Advising Team

The M.A.P. Advising Team is proud to announce a series of 30-minute drop-in advising trainings via Blackboard Collaborate. They include a 15-minute presentation and 15 minutes of Q&A with attendees. The live sessions will be recorded for later viewing. Upcoming topics include CCP, Promise Programs, Aviso Tagging, and Advising for Athletes. Registration information is coming soon!

The M.A.P. Advising Team provided advising training to 60 adjunct instructors on CCCC’s Adjunct Night on August 14, 2019. This team is also planning a series of in-person advising training sessions throughout 2019-20. They will include presentations by CCCC advisors and NACADA webinars.

Assessment Team

The M.A.P. Assessment Team continues to review QEP assessment metrics and results. The group is started to focus on 2019-20 assessment planning. The M.A.P. Assessment Team wants to create dashboards that easily track M.A.P. data.

Marketing Team

The M.A.P. Marketing Team created a My Success Checklist and Students Services guides to help students in their first semester These resources are now available on the CCCC Advising website under Current Students.

Success Council

The Success Council met in Spring 2019 to provide feedback on M.A.P. advising and admissions initiatives. Overwhelmingly, students wanted an advisor who is a problem solver, is trustworthy, is encouraging, and makes time for students. The intake survey is being used to identify potential barriers to student success and to connect students with CCCC resources. Shawna Jones is the new Success Council Chair! Shawna is an English Instructor on the Lee Main Campus. She looks forward to the Fall 2019 meeting!
