CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!

Employee of the Month: Erika Parker

Employee of the Month

Erika Parker is the Program Director for the Health Information Technology department. She has worked at CCCC since July 2017 coming straight from industry with no teaching experience. She has fully immersed herself in to the CCCC culture and seeks out every opportunity for professional development that she can find. More importantly, she has grown into an amazing on-line instructor with overwhelmingly positive student satisfaction feedback in her end of course surveys.

As the Program Director, she has the challenge of coming into a new program that is still being developed and is in the process of initial accreditation, which are both daunting tasks. She takes on each new responsibility with a smile, and is always willing to put aside what she is working on to help her faculty and students.

Erika Parker

Program Director, Health Information Technology

How long have you worked for CCCC?
I started with CCCC in July 2017, so I have been a part of the family for almost two years.

What brought you to CCCC?
While at ECU, my department chair planted the idea that I should consider being an educator for our profession. To be completely honest, I thought she was a little crazy at the time as I had not considered that option and was pretty headstrong that I was going to be some type of manager or administrator. However, that conversation got me thinking about the possibility and the alignment with my interests and personality...so I made plans for that later in life. Fast-forward almost eight years, after serving as a Manager and Privacy Officer of our local health system, I received a call about this opportunity, and everything fell into place. While there were a lot of factors involved, I can truly say that advising conversation was the spark that brought me to CCCC. I am thrilled to be at CCCC and developing the future of our profession, in my hometown community!

Describe what you do for CCCC.
I am the Program Director of the Health Information Technology program. I oversee an amazing team of faculty that teach in the HIT program. While I do the normal responsibilities of program directors such as planning, evaluating, developing, budgeting, etc. for the program. I also teach in the HIT and ACA programs and serve as an academic advisor. However, my biggest project thus far has been working on our program's accreditation with the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education. This process has been very challenging, but also rewarding! Our onsite visit is planned for September and we couldn't be more excited!

Where were you born?
Dunn.

Where did you grow up?
Benson (Harnett County).

Educational credentials?
Bachelor of Science, Health Information Management, East Carolina University (Go Pirates!); Bachelor of Science, Health Services Management, East Carolina University; Master of Health Administration, Pfeiffer University.

Where do you live now?
Dunn (Plainview).

Tell us about your family!
My husband, Branden Parker, and I will be married five years this November, but have been together for about 14 years now. We live in the Plainview community of Dunn with our four-legged son, River. He is a 1.5-year-old (very energetic) Cockapoo (dog)!

What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
I love to travel. We are heading to Ireland and Scotland this summer and have been to quite a few amazing places! We have traveled to Thailand, Italy, France, Spain, Tunisia, Aruba, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, and Mexico...to name a few. I also studied abroad for my Master's in Germany, which an awesome experience! In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with friends and family, shopping (TJ Maxx and Home Goods are my favorites), and have recently taken up an interest in gardening.

What superhero power would you most like to have?
Teleporting (so I could travel anywhere fast).

Which actor would portray you in a movie about your life?
In true teacher fashion, I took an assessment to help me find my match and my result was Jennifer Lawrence. She is described as down to earth, honest, romantic, intense, randomly hilarious, self-effacing, stoic, brave, smart worker, industrious, fiery, enthusiastic, glamorous, and athletic (well I don't know about that part), but overall these seem to describe me pretty well!

What is your favorite meal?
I am a foodie and really enjoy the local farm-to-table movement...there have been so many amazing things I have tried I couldn't narrow it down to just one.

Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
It is an honor to be recognized as April's employee of the month. I work alongside an amazing team of faculty and staff. We are doing such amazing things at CCCC, and I am privileged to be a part of it!

Community Baby Shower

On April 23, CCCC Nursing Department in Collaboration with the Lee County Health Department, hosted a community baby shower at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. The event provided education, prizes and gifts for expecting mothers and mothers with children under the age of 1. There were over 1,200 people in attendance with 448 registered moms. Attendants were mostly from Lee, Harnett, and Cumberland counties. Overall, 32 different counties in North Carolina were represented.

The Nursing Department would like to send a big thank you to Dawn Gregory (Nursing Faculty) and Amanda Gordon (Lee County Health Department) for organizing the event. We would also like to thank the CCCC Copy Center for assisting students with education displays and materials needed for the event, the Marketing Department for helping with organization and advertising, the Foundation for guidance in obtaining sponsors for the event, the Civic Center for the venue, and the volunteers that took time to assist with the event.

We had four sponsors. There were two gold, one silver and one bronze sponsor. Over 70 large gifts were given. The gifts included pack and plays, car seats, and baskets with essential products. In addition to the large gifts, there were hundreds of participation prizes given out. There were approximately 35 vendors on site to provide education and resources to the mothers and partners.

We are anticipating making this an annual outreach event. If you know of someone that would like to participate in or sponsor the event, please have them contact Dawn Gregory at (919) 718-7479 or dgreg699@cccc.edu.

First in the World (FITW) Update: An Early Look at the Benefits of Proactive Success Coaching on Student Retention

CCCC's FITW project is in year four of five. Designed to introduce proactive and individualized success coaching at 10 North Carolina community colleges, the FITW project's unique combination of targeted student success coaching, predictive analytics, technology supports, and business process changes has the potential to significantly improve student success.

Although the project continues for another year, early results from our evaluator, DVP Praxis, indicate that:

  • Success coaching has positive impact on students' retention.
  • The benefits of coaching emerge over time, with stronger effects on longer-term versus shorter-term retention outcomes.
  • Key coaching practices appear to be particularly effective in improving student outcomes.

Read the full white paper here.

Major kudos to Sarah Deal, Jairo McMican, Daniel Berndt, Kevin Pearson, and Anthea Saez on their leadership on this project locally at CCCC.

Guided Pathways to Success (GPS): Informing Our Next Strategic Plan

Here's to the beginning of another successful semester! We are writing today to provide and seek information that will inform our college's new strategic plan.

Guided Pathways to Success (GPS) is an opportunity to review and modify the way we organize student services support, advising, and our approaches to enhancing the teaching and learning environment. We will identify areas where we can simplify the process from admission to completion and remove barriers to maximize student success. The college was chosen as one of 17 colleges to participate in the statewide GPS cohort last year. A team of faculty and staff have been engaged in assessments and institutes to learn more about successful strategies being used across the country, and exploring how these could be implemented to help students at CCCC.

Conversations surrounding 'Guided Pathways to Success' have been occurring nationwide and locally, and as our 2015-2019 Strategic Plan comes to an end, GPS will help inform CCCC's new strategic plan to be launched in 2020.

We need your feedback!

Complete the NC GPS Feedback form to help inform the process.

News From The Library

Library Instruction

Librarians are now scheduling instruction sessions for the Summer 2019 semester. Faculty may request an instruction session for seated classes using our online form, or by contacting the librarian at your campus:

  • Chatham - Dana Haven (919) 545-8088
  • Harnett - Grace Sharrar (910) 814-8814
  • Lee - Samantha O'Connor (919) 718-7340 or Nora Burmeister (919) 718-7435

Online Librarians

If your students could benefit from persistent access to subject-specific library resources and research concepts integrated in your course shell, consider adding a librarian to your Blackboard course. If you opt in to having a librarian in your course, we'll contact you to find the best way to help your students reach their learning objectives. This can include embedding digital content from library databases, specialized instructional modules focusing on academic research practices, and/or a persistent chat box that students can use to contact a librarian 24/7 (with the exception of federal holidays). To have a librarian added to your Summer 2019 course, please email Distance Education with your name and the course number (ex. ENG111 LN1).

Summer Reading

Beginning May 20, students, faculty, and staff can sign up for our summer reading program. This year, we have a "Set Your Own Goal" challenge. Participants can set a goal for themselves and pick up a reading log at the information desk at the Harnett or Lee libraries. Once you reach your goal, return with your completed log to claim a prize. The program runs through July 31.

Book Sale

The Lee Library is having a book sale! All items are 5c each. Stop by early for the best selection before they are all gone.

Holiday Hours

The Lee and Harnett libraries will be closed on Monday, May 27, for the Memorial Day holiday.

Harnett Library News

3D Printing

Harnett faculty are reminded that you can contact Grace Sharrar if you would like to incorporate 3D printing into your classes. Some examples of items we have printed for instructors include heart models, mechanical parts, and a scoop for a statistics exercise. Contact Grace at gsharrar@cccc.edu or (910) 814-8843 for more information.

Community Garden

The Harnett Library community garden is now under way. We planted cucumbers, tomatoes, green peppers, jalapenos, kale, spinach, and zucchini. We still have blueberry bushes and an herb garden from last year, and we added stevia to it this year. Some faculty members will be helping us water the plants this summer, but we would love to have more volunteers. If you would like to help, contact Grace Sharrar.

Ships Named North Carolina - May 23 at 6:30 p.m.

Colonel Sion Harrington presents this program about the five warships that have borne the state's name: Ship-of-the-Line (1823), the Confederate ram (1863), the Armored Cruiser (ACR-12), the Battleship (1941), and currently, the nuclear submarine (SSN777). This program honors the men and women of North Carolina who have served in the military in defense of their state and nation.

Lieutenant Colonel Sion H. Harrington III, United States Army (Retired), spent nearly four decades in the military, which included duty with the 82nd Airborne Division; XVIII Airborne Corps; 1st Special Operations Command (Airborne); the United States Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command; as well as hostile fire area deployments to Grenada and Bosnia. Colonel Harrington dedicated his final working years to the collection and preservation of North Carolina military history as the Military Collection Archivist for the State Archives of North Carolina, retiring in 2011.

Holiday Hours

Closed Saturday, May 25, and Monday, May 27, for Memorial Day.

Film Screening of Taking Chance - May 30 at 6:30 p.m.

Taking Chance is the remarkable true story of one solder's death in battle, another solder's journey of discovery, and a nation's reverence and gratitude toward its war dead. Lance Corporal Chance Phelps (USMC) was only 19 years old when he was killed during active duty. Now, as Lance Corporal Phelps is prepared for his final journey back home, Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobl (Kevin Bacon), a volunteer military escort officer, makes it his personal mission to ensure that his fallen brother is laid to rest with the proper respect.

Pride Month Film Series - Thursdays in June at 6 p.m.

Chatham Community Library is celebrating Pride Month with a four-part film series beginning on Thursday, June 6, from 6 -8 p.m., in the Holmes Meeting Room. Films in the series include:

  • 6/6: Stonewall (2015). The plot of this film revolves around the 1969 Stonewall riots, the violent clash that kicked off the gay rights movement in New York City. Stonewall was nominated for the 2017 ACTRA Awards for Outstanding Performance (Male) and for the Most Valuable Movie of the Year at the 2016 Cinema for Peace Awards.
  • 6/13: Milk (2008). Milk is the story of Harvey Milk, and his struggles as an American gay activist who fought for gay rights and became California's first openly gay elected official. This film won two Oscars in 2009 - Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Sean Penn) and Best Writing, Original Screenplay (Dustin Lance Black).
  • 6/20: Love, Simon (2018). In this film, Simon Spier (Nick Robinson) keeps a huge secret from his family, his friends and all of his classmates: he's gay. When that secret is threatened, Simon must face everyone and come to terms with his identity. Love, Simon won the 2018 Teen Choice Awards for Choice Movie: Comedy.
  • 6/27: The Pearl (2016). The Pearl is a cinematic and intimate profile of four transgender women that come out in their senior years. Set in logging towns in the Pacific NW the visceral, observational story explores what it means to leave behind living as a man. This film was nominated for the Spotlight Award at the 2017 Cinema Eye Honors Awards.

June is Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month. The month has been recognized since 1970, one year after the Stonewall riots, which took place on June 28 1969, commemorating the impact the riots had on society. The riots are widely considered to constitute the most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBTQ rights in the United States. 2019 marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.

ESL Students Read to Children Bilingual Books

Dear CCCC Colleagues:

I would like to share an amazing story about my ESL students in the morning and evening program at the Siler City Campus.

Every year, Childcare Networks and many other non-profit agencies in Chatham County celebrate The Day of The Books event in Siler City. This year, I wanted students to get involved in the literacy aspect and main goal of this event. Thus, I decided to bring bilingual children's books to read in class.

At CCCC, students practiced reading skills that involved pronunciation, intonation, and dramatization. They also learned how to ask participants to make predictions, inferences, and connections. I was thrilled to see the students' responses to become volunteers at the reading tent and the other event stations. It was exciting to see ESL students conquering their nervousness and fears in front of an audience. Children and parents connected with so much enthusiasm to our students' stories that they were inspired to continue this reading practice at home and in the community.
