All
companies have at least one thing in common. All have a need for a trained
work force. Central Carolina Community College, Lee, Chatham and, Harnett
County Small Business Centers offer a variety of programs to assist
area employers with training, retraining and upgrading the skills of
their workers.
-
Occupational extension courses are developed for any industrial
training need which can be addressed in a classroom or lab environment.
Courses are tailored to meet a particular company's needs. They can
be held on site or at any of the college's three campuses. Minimum
class size is eight (8) and the cost is $50 per student plus book if
required. For more detailed information contact Carl Thompson ,

- In-Plant Training can be provided at the workplace when workers
must learn new skills which can best be taught by actually doing the
operation. Requirements for in-plant training include: workers must
learn a new skills such as operating a new machine or assembling a new
product; there must be enough workers to make offering the class economically
feasible; and, training is limited to 440 hours per employee per year.
An employee of the company can be hired by the college to provide the
instruction or the college can reimburse the company an amount agreed
upon as compensation for the time the employee is released from regular
duties to teach. For more detailed information contact Cathy Swindell, Industrial Relations Officer.
Focused Industrial Training (FIT) is designed to provide training
tailored for existing industries. Training can be classroom, at a machine
or a combination of the two. A major strength of this program is that
training can be provided for a small group and be company and job specific.

- New and Expanding Industry Training is used whenever a new
industry is established or an existing industry expands by as many as
twelve employees. The cost of training can be paid by the state through
CCCC. The program includes instructor's salary and per diem, if necessary,
and a scrap allowance of up to $100 per trainee. Funds may also be used
to lease space for training while construction projects are ongoing.

Literacy classes have assisted numerous industries in the upgrading
of their employees skills. Many industries have recognized the importance
of having a literate work force. The CCCC literacy program is designed
to improve academic skills in areas such as math and reading. High
school
graduates as well as non-high school graduates may enroll in these
classes. Programs are available to help students prepare for the General
Educational
Development (GED) test, to assist foreign born individuals who desire
to learn English in the English as a Second Language (ESL) program.
For non-readers the college has the Adult Basic Education (ABE) program.
