CCCC faculty paper accepted for SAIS Conference
Feb 14, 2008
SANFORD – A paper on classroom management co-authored by two Central Carolina Community College faculty has been accepted for presentation at the Southern Association for Information Systems Conference. The conference takes place March 13-15 in Richmond.
“The Big Brother and Better Early College Grades,” by Dr. Bob Joyce, Chairman of the Computer Information Technology Department, and Dr. Harald Schmidl, CIT Instructor, analyzes the use of a classroom management system and its impact on grades. The system allows the instructor to block students from using the Internet so that class-wide demonstrations can be sent to the students’ computers, rather than projected on a screen.
Their research found that this enhanced use of technology in the classroom facilitated direct interaction between students and instructors. It also improved the students’ overall grade average, with fewer F’s and far more B’s earned than when the system was not used.
Former CCCC Dental Program head published
SANFORD – Marsha Black, former head of Central Carolina Community College’s Dental Program, co-authored an article, “Effect of Power Toothbrushing on Simulated Wear of Dental Cement Margins,” published in the October 2007 edition of The Journal of Dental Hygiene, the publication of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association.
Black is now an assistant professor at the University of Missouri-Kansas City School of Dentistry. She came to CCCC in 2005 to set up the program, which includes an associate degree in dental hygiene and a diploma program in dental assisting.
She also oversaw the design and setting up of the Dental Program’s training center at the W.B. Wicker Business Campus in Sanford. The American Dental Association accredits the program, which started offering classes in March 2007. It collaborates with Lee County Public Health in the Central Carolina Dental Center at the business campus in providing dental care.
Black will return to Sanford on May 9 to attend the graduation of CCCC’s first Dental Assisting class. |
