CCCC Con Ed medical programs hold first joint graduation
Dec 19, 2007

SANFORD – For the first time, the Continuing Education medical programs at Central Carolina Community College’s Lee County Campus held a joint graduation ceremony for all their students.

The students and about 800 family members and friends gathered for this special event Dec. 17 in the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center. A total of 256 students completed their course work in the summer or fall semesters. Of these, 140 in 10 certificate programs participated in the graduation ceremony. Previously, only nursing assistant I had had a ceremony. At the joint graduation, students received their specific program certificates.

“We felt all students worked hard for their certificates and they deserved a graduation,” said Dr. Teronda McNeill, CCCC Lee County director of Continuing Education. “We’re proud of them and this gives them a chance to show their families what they’ve achieved.”

Certificates were awarded in EKG Technician, EKG Monitor Technician, Advanced EKG Technician, Phlebotomy, Optometric Assistant, Health Activities Director, Nursing Assistant I and II, Nursing Assistant I Refresher, and Pharmacy Technician. Nursing Assistant students also received their N.A. pins.

CCCC President Matt Garrett was the keynote speaker for the event. He told the graduates that they were entering a wonderful profession, one in which they would help people feel better.

“What could be better than that?” he said.

The graduation was very special to Barbara Denkins Spangler and Tammy Bray, mother and daughter. They took their Nursing Assistant I classes together and now both plan to work in nursing homes, in long-term care.

“It was worth it,” Spangler said of her studies. Having classes with her daughter and going through graduation together was frosting on the cake.

McNeil urged the students not to stop with the certificates they’ve earned, but to continue with their education.

Jacob Marrero, of Cameron, earned his Phlebotomy certificate. Like many of the graduates, he’s looking forward to taking McNeil’s advice. Finding a job is the first priority, then he hopes to return to CCCC and get his EKG technician certificates.

Ashley Haddock, of Sanford, received her NA-I certificate and has already made her plans to continue her education. Her mother, Amy Clark, earned her Associate Degree Nursing at CCCC in 2003, and Haddock plans to follow the same path.

“My NA-I is just another milestone toward my big goal of graduating from the ADN program,” she said.

Nursing instructor Shonda Goldston was all smiles as she congratulated graduates after the ceremony.

“I’m excited for what’s to come for them,” she said. Then, turning to a few of them, she added, “Go get it!”
