Washington receives Governor’s Award for Workforce Excellence

SANFORD – Belinda Washington, of Sanford, a 2006 graduate of Central Carolina Community College, received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Workforce Development-Outstanding Adult Participant, during the Governor’s Award Banquet at the N.C. Workforce Development Partnership Conference in Greensboro on Oct. 18.
Washington was honored for her success in overcoming great challenges. She has suffered epileptic seizures at times, caused by a head injury as a teenager. When her father died, she worked as a certified nursing assistant to care for her mother and a brother.
Washington had a dream of becoming a computer programmer and the JobLink Career Center helped her to enroll in the office systems technology program at Central Carolina Community College. Washington received her Associate in Applied Science in OST, as well certificates in word processing and receptionist, in August 2006. She is now an outpatient registration receptionist at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.
Washington was one of two honored as Outstanding Adult Participants. The other was Randy Barker, of Asheboro. Charlie McAllister, of St. Pauls, was honored as the Outstanding Older Youth Participant, and Aren Doolin, of Spruce Pine, as the Outstanding Younger Youth Participant. Nattalie Castro, of Beaufort County JobLink Career Center received the Wayne Daves Award for Outstanding Achievement. Two companies received the Excellence in Workforce Development-Outstanding Employer award: Century Furniture Co., of Hickory, and Impressions Marketing Group, of Washington. |
