CCCC hosts Hispanic, jazz events
Oct 31, 2007
PITTSBORO – Central Carolina Community College joins with two major community organizations to present events for the public during the weekend of Nov. 9-11.
• Community Dialog Across Borders
CCCC and the Hispanic Liaison of Chatham County present “Community Dialog Across Borders,” a program of visual and literary arts. Pulitzer Prize winners Hector Tobar, Los Angeles Times journalist and author, and José Galvez, documentary photographer, will take part in a discussion and question-and-answer session intended to generate dialog about Latino immigration and its socio-economic and cultural impact. Dr. Maria DeGuzman, director of Latino Studies at UNC-Chapel Hill, will serve as the discussion moderator.
The event takes place from 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m., Friday, Nov. 9, in Building 2 at the college’s Chatham County Campus, in Pittsboro, and 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the Fearrington Village Barn. Admission is free.
Carl Thompson, CCCC director of Continuing Education in Chatham County, said that in recent years there has, at times, been tension between Hispanics and others in the Chatham community. In 2000, David Duke, former Ku Klux Klansman and current president of European-American Unity and Rights Organization (EURO), visited Siler City and spoke against immigration and the increasing number of Hispanics in the community.
“Our purpose at CCCC Chatham is to help bridge the gap of understanding between the Hispanic community and the Chatham community at large,” Thompson said. “That is why we agreed to co-sponsor the Hispanic Liaison event.”
The Hispanic Liaison came into existence in 1995 to address the needs of the Hispanic immigrant community. It seeks to find answers to community problems by creating opportunities for community members to identify issues, learn, dialog and problem-solve together. For more information about the event, call the organization at (919) 742-1448 or visit its web site, www.evhnc.org.
• The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra
From 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11, the college presents The Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra in performance at The Barn in Fearrington Village. Admission is free.
“Northeast Chatham is rapidly growing and this occasion offers CCCC a tremendous opportunity to make acquaintances in the community and apprize them of the educational programs that we offer," Thompson said.
Gregg Gelb, saxophonist, clarinetist, arranger and bandleader, founded the nonprofit Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra and Society in 1990 while he was a visiting artist at CCCC. In 1997, he received the Jazz Fellowship Award from the N.C. Arts Council. He performs regularly with the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra.
Joining the orchestra for this performance will be well-known jazz guitarist and composer Baron Tymas. In addition to performing, he teaches music at N.C. Central University.
