International publication
features local college, arts incubator
Sanford, NC – The October issue of Ceramics
Monthly,
an internationally circulated magazine on ceramic arts
and craft, features the ceramic arts program at Central
Carolina Community College (CCCC) and the NC Arts Incubator,
both located in Siler City, North Carolina.
The article written by Jan Rider, was the result of a collaborative
effort with lead instructor and coordinator for ceramic
arts education, Dan Rhode, and CCCC Chatham County small
business director, Leon Tongret, who also serves as president
of the non-profit corporation developing the arts incubator. Photographer
for the project was Seth Tice-Lewis of Carrboro, NC.
Ceramics Monthly has a paid circulation of about 40,000. It
is the world’s oldest, largest, and most comprehensive
ceramic art periodical. Founded in 1953, the magazine
features articles on potters and ceramic artists from throughout
the world, as well as information on exhibits, production
processes, book and video reviews, and ceramic art techniques,
clay and glaze recipes.
According to Rhode the article will help promote the college
program with its unique instructional emphasis on marketing
and entrepreneurial skills. “Besides a foundation
in artistic principles and extensive hands-on practice
to help develop technique and individual style, our program
stands out because we incorporate business principles that
will help artists manage galleries and be more successful
at selling and promoting their creations,” said Rhode. The
curriculum program is entering its second year and is an
anchor tenant in the innovative arts incubator.
“Students thrive in the rich creative atmosphere where they are able to
work beside
established artists,” said Rhode. “Many of the resident artists
who have relocated to the arts incubator are also teaching at the college on
a part-time basis. This international publicity is exciting. It is
great for the college, for the incubator, for the town of Siler City, and for
our state.”
