College international day celebrated cultures,
cuisines, similarities
Sanford, NC – The smells of ethnic cuisines from around the world filled
Central Carolina Community College’s (CCCC) Budd Court recently as the
college family celebrated international day.

Dozens of students and staff turned out to sample the variety of cuisines representing
countries ranging from the Philippines to Mexico while speakers from various
backgrounds shared about their experiences growing up in a different culture
and coming to North Carolina.
The event was organized by the Student Government Association (SGA) and the college
diversity committee. Its purpose was to educate the college community about the
different cultures that can be found on campus.
“It’s important for us to learn about other cultures,” said
Information Systems Instructor Kavita Gada during a presentation on her native
country, India. “Our
world is becoming increasingly interconnected.”
In addition to Gada, students and staff had the opportunity to hear from Peter
Eubuomwan, a 2003 CCCC graduate from Nigeria, and Carla Cisnero from Nicaragua. In
addition to presenting information about their native lands, the presenters talked
about differences and similarities between their native cultures and American
culture.
Diversity Committee Chairman George Clayton, who is lead instructor for human
resources management, hopes the event will become an annual tradition. “Attendance
at two of the three presentations was at near capacity and everyone enjoyed the
international foods. We hope to build on this year’s success.”
