Artist Ken Mahar (left) displays several of his woodcarving pieces with a little help from Melody McGee, CCCC’s continuing education director for Harnett County.  Mahar will join approximately 15 other artists on January 10, 2004 for “A Taste of the Arts” at the CCCC Shawtown Center in Lillington.

Lillington, NC—The arts enrich our lives.  If you like to enjoy the artistic skills of others or if you’re interested in developing a new hobby, plan to attend Central Carolina Community College’s “A Taste of the Arts” at the Shawtown Center on January 10, 2004. At this unique event, artists will present hands-on arts demonstrations.

Approximately 15 artisans will showcase their talents and display their works during the event.  The artists are not only skilled in their crafts, but enthusiastic and experienced instructors from the community service classes at CCCC.  Both the artists and college administrators want people to come away from the event with a desire to learn something new.

”I hope they see the old wood and beautiful carvings and want to learn how to do this,” says woodcarver Ken Mahar.  “I love teaching others what I’ve learned.”

Basket making, cake decorating, crocheting, jewelry making, stamping, wreath making, tatting, oil paining and picture frame matting are some of the arts scheduled to be represented.  In addition to the traditional arts, instructors will demonstrate massage therapy and yoga.  Several dance classes will perform throughout the day.

”We want people to experience the variety of classes that CCCC offers,” says Melody McGee, director of continuing education in Harnett County.  “This showcase is an excellent way for people searching for a new hobby to explore the possibilities.”

The free community event lasts from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. at the CCCC Shawtown Center, 695 Shawtown Road, in Lillington.  CCCC staff will be available to answer questions regarding classes and to take registrations.  People over the age of 65 may qualify for fee waivers.
