CCCC graduates 16 in law enforcement

SANFORD - Sixteen cadets received their Basic Law Enforcement Training certificates at Central Carolina Community College's BLET fall graduation exercises Dec. 19 at the Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center.
rnReceiving their certificates were Stephen Caviness, William Heck, John Hawley, and Kurt Ailerson Jr., all of Sanford; Charleton Carter and Christopher Holt, both of Cameron; Bridget Daniel and Jonathan Edell, both of Pittsboro; Kathryn Hartsell, of Broadway; Kaitlyn Caldwell, of Angier; Marvedda Chezem, of Lillington; Benjamin Bankert, of Apex; Johnathan Edwards, of Dunn; Christopher Carroll, of Siler City; Patrick Holmes, of Spring Lake; and Rebecca Gipson, of Falcon.
rnAwards were presented to the top students. Caviness received the Highest Class Grade Point Average and Highest State Exam awards; Edell, the Most Improved Physical Fitness Award; Holt, the Best Police Officers Physical Abilities Test (POPAT) Award; and Rebecca Gipson, the Jimmy Collins Top Gun Award.
rnOfficer Benson D. Wise, of the Sanford Police Department, delivered the graduation remarks. Class Leader Heck gave the class response.
rnThe college's BLET program is under the direction of Robert Powell. Cadets had to complete 624 hours of law enforcement training in areas such as criminal and motor vehicle laws, vehicle stops, first responder medical care, firearms training, driver's training, sheriff's duties, and subject control/arrest techniques.
rnEach graduate also had to pass all 35 blocks of instruction, a rigorous 12-week physical training program, as well as a four-hour written comprehensive state examination administered by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Training and Standards Division.
rnAll graduates are qualified to be certified law enforcement officers in North Carolina.
rnSponsoring agencies for the fall BLET class were the police departments of Broadway, Dunn, Fuquay-Varina, Pittsboro, Sanford, and Siler City; the sheriff offices of Chatham, Harnett, Lee and Moore counties; and the U.S. Veterans Administration. Chatham Central High School provided use of its facilities for Rapid Deployment Training.
