LILLINGTON - "Helping To Bring My Dream To Light."

That was the theme of Central Carolina Community College's celebration of the 2015 International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies, as declared by the United Nations. Approximately 100 people attended the event, which was held Tuesday, Nov. 17, at Central Carolina Community College's Harnett County Campus.

Guest speakers for the event included Natalia Chekhovskaya Kearney, Program Manager, LASER-TEC / Indian River State College; Ron Darbee, Division Superintendent, National Ignition Facility, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory; Scott Hamlin, President, MegaWatt Lasers; Joel Sigmund, Market Segment Manager, Disco Hi-Tec America, Inc.; and Kevin Stevens, Ph.D., Director of Research and Development, Northrop Grumman - SYNOPTICS.

Attendees were able to visit the CCCC Laser and Photonics program facilities, including a tour of the labs.

"I could not have been more pleased with the community's participation in the celebration," said Gary Beasley, CCCC Laser and Photonics Technology Lead Instructor. "The guest speakers deserve a special thanks for taking time out of their busy schedules to support encouraging K-12 students to study science and math to prepare for high-tech jobs of the future.

"The event's guest speakers, tours, and laser demonstrations gave us a chance to contribute to the United Nations' mission this year of highlighting the importance of 'Light Energy' in our daily lives, and the role the CCCC laser and photonics program plays in 'Helping to Bring Students' Career Dreams to Light!'"

An essay contest for students was part of the celebration. Essay winners were Carson Best, Avery Chumley, Seth Kuenzler, Samia Mohamed, Tarrek Mohamed, Ashlyn Strickland, Wesley Strickland, and Zachary Strickland.

Aaron M. Adams, a student in CCCC's Laser and Photonics program, served as event manager.
