SANFORD - A contingent of Central Carolina Community College math students recently visited Appalachian State University in Boone. CCCC Math Instructors Mitchell Carr and Ben Falero accompanied the students. Upon arrival, the CCCC group met with members of the ASU Department of Mathematical Sciences and had lunch.
"Our group got some really useful one-on-one time with several faculty members in the mathematics department at ASU while we had lunch," said Carr. "While there, we saw a few of my former students that had transferred from CCCC to ASU. One of those former students is Caleb Davis, who now is mathematics major at ASU. Caleb spoke candidly to our group about his experiences at ASU."
After lunch, the CCCC group attended a general admissions presentation specifically for transfer students. After the transfer presentation, the group was given a campus tour.
After the tour, the group met with Dr. Rahman Tashakkori, director of the S-STEM scholarship program designed for math and computer science majors.
"I feel like this type of exposure to the transfer experience is important so that students can connect with people in their prospective majors and see the university as it really is," said Carr. "There is a fear of the unknown that we all face as we embark on a new journey in life."
"Appalachian is staffed by a group of dedicated and friendly professionals who are there to help," said Carr. "I hope that this trip, and more like it in the future, will give students confidence that they can do it. They can achieve their goals and not be intimidated by the unknowns."
