PITTSBORO - The Students For Sustainability Club (S4S) at Central Carolina Community College hosts Earth Week festivities April 20-26 at the college's Chatham County Campus, 764 West St. Pittsboro.
From dumpster diving to examine what's in the campus trash to an open house of the advanced construction class cottage, S4S will be sharing and discovering with the community in a different way each day.
"There's so much to celebrate, contemplate, and so much to be done -- one day doesn't seem to scratch the surface, so we decided to make Earth Day into Earth Week this year," said CCCC student Danielle DuClos, Earth Week organizer for S4S. "Earth Week is a time to rejoice together about what we value and look at just some of the ways we can make changes with great impact toward a positive future for ourselves and our children.
"Everyone is welcome. This is a celebration for everyone and each one of us can make far-reaching changes in our lives and in the lives of others," said DuClos. "The answers are all around us. We just need to make the connections happen and adapt effectively by evolving consciously."
Here is a schedule of the week's events:
Monday (April 20) - Dumpster Revival Dive - What do we throw in the trash? What can be recycled? What can we compost? Join the CCCC Students for Sustainability at 1 p.m. for a dumpster dive - an assessment of our ability to recycle, reduce, and reuse.
Tuesday (April 21) - Play On The Grounds - Unplug, connect with your body, move more. Come play volleyball, disc golf, or soccer on the campus grounds. Meet in the Library Courtyard at 1:30 p.m. to get started.
Wednesday (April 22) - Happy Earth Day - Students will be off-campus at the North Carolina Energy Conference.
Thursday (April 23) - Oven-Fresh Pizza On The Farm And Tour - Farm tour, brown bag lunch, pizza oven event at 1 p.m. Learn about sustainable agriculture on the CCCC Student Organic Farm. The outdoor pizza oven will be in operation - bring something to share.
Friday (April 24) - Chatham Cottage Tour and Creative Reuse Fair - Students will host an open house at 4 p.m. to view the 2015 Chatham Cottage, and hold a creative reuse fair. Open to the public; bring your reuse idea to demonstrate. Students will bring their own re-creations.
Saturday (April 25) - NC WARN's "Our Energy Future" workshop will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Holmes Room of the Chatham Community Library on the CCCC Chatham Campus.
In addition, the CCCC Student Farm will be among 40 farmers on the Piedmont Farm Tour to be held Saturday and Sunday, April 25-26, organized by the Carolina Farm Stewardship Association.
"The Sustainability Technologies and Sustainable Agriculture programs at CCCC are a great resource for our area, for both knowledge and community centered around these important focuses," said DuClos. "The classes in these programs and in the continuing education program bring together people from all walks of life who share similar concerns about how we're shaping our world and they also share determination to be a part of the solutions we need."
CCCC Students for Sustainability Club offers student members fellowship and learning opportunities as they build sustainability awareness.
