CCCC ESTC acquires fire engines

01.23.2015 • College & Community, College General, Curriculum Programs

SANFORD - Central Carolina Community College's Emergency Services Training Center (ESTC) has acquired two fire engines - a 2002 Pierce Enforcer Rescue Pumper and a 1998 Pierce Saber Pumper from Brindlee Mountain Fire Apparatus in Alabama.

The two engines will be used during the Firefighter Training Academy and the newly established Basic Firefighter School. The trucks will also allow the college to expand its offering of in-service training both mandated and elective.

"We are very excited to have this equipment and what it will mean to our students and the departments we serve," said Dwight Dixon, CCCC's ESTC Director. "Coupled with our Class A burn building, breathing air supply trailer, rescue tower. and driving track, we have one of the best emergency services training sites available in the state."

Joey Shue, CCCC's Fire and Rescue Training Coordinator, said it has been exciting to get the equipment. "Before, whenever we had to have a fire truck on the scene or a piece of apparatus, we would have to call one of the fire departments in the county. We depended on them and we had to work with their schedule," said Shue. "Now that we have these apparatuses, all we have to do is pull them out and go to work. It's going to be more convenient for our classes."

The new equipment will be used during the upcoming Basic Firefighter School, which begins March 3. The 15-week school is a requirement for new firefighters, with classes scheduled on evenings and weekends. The school will include the following areas: orientation and safety; fire behavior; personal protective equipment; portable extinguishers; building construction; forcible entry; loss control; ladders; fire hose, appliances and streams; ventilation; water supplies and live burn.
