09.22.2014 • College & Community, College General

SANFORD - Dr. Michael Munger, professor of Political Science, Economics, and Public Policy at Duke University, will be the first speaker of the school year for the Free Market Lecture Series sponsored by Central Carolina Community College's Business Technologies Department.

Dr. Munger will speak on "Crony Capitalism" at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, in the Lecture Hall at the college's Dennis A. Wicker Civic Center, 1801 Nash St., Sanford.

The presentation is open to students and the public and is free of charge.

Dr. Munger has been described by National Review as "a libertarian economist ... and one of our most consistently entertaining public intellectuals...."

Dr. Munger's research interests include the study of the morality of exchange and the working of legislative institutions in producing policy. Much of his recent work has been in philosophy, examining the concept of truly voluntary exchange. His primary blog, Kids Prefer Cheese, is an irreverent look at policy, politics, and the foibles of pundits everywhere.

Professor Munger received his Ph.D. in Economics at Washington University in St. Louis in 1984, and then worked as a staff economist at the Federal Trade Commission. He has taught at Dartmouth College, University of Texas at Austin, and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. At UNC, he directed the MPA Program, which trains public service professionals, especially city and county management.

He moved to Duke in 1997 and was chair of the Political Science Department from 2000 through 2010. He is currently director of the interdisciplinary PPE Program at Duke. He has won three University-wide teaching awards.
