CCCC-Chatham offers green building classes

PITTSBORO – Central Carolina Community College’s Green Building and Renewable Energy Program, at the college’s Chatham County Campus, is offering a variety of classes during the spring and summer in green construction and renewable energy.

State and National Standards Overview
This class provides a detailed introduction to state and national residential green building and energy efficiency standards, such as requirements for building a certified green home, how to get certified, tax and financial benefits, and cost. Both homeowners and builders will want to attend this class to learn about the numerous certification programs and their financial, ecological and health benefits. The class runs 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Tuesdays, May 26-Aug. 4. Jamie Hager is the instructor. The course fee is $55.
 
Green Home Construction/Alternative Energy 
Understand the basic components of residential wood frame construction with an emphasis on energy efficiency and integration of renewable energy technologies. Gain information on making your home green, renovating or designing a home for maximum energy efficiency, grid-tied homes, and net metering. The instructor, John Delafield, is a green homebuilder with experience with utility net metering programs. The class runs 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Thursdays, May 28-Aug. 6. The course fee is $56.25. 

Introduction to Renewable Energy 
Learn the basics of wind, hydro and solar power. Learn what works best in your community, about tax breaks, and sizing a system for the maximum cost/benefit return. This course includes basic physics and materials making up renewable energy today. The class runs 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Wednesdays, May 27-July 27. The course fee is $55. Andrew McMahon is the instructor. 
  
Introduction to Sustainable Communities 
This course deals with understanding the principles of sustainability as they apply to our local communities, including the impact of planning, public housing, zoning, promoting local economies and small farms. The class was a hit last semester because students focus on timely real-life applications. The instructor is Jeffrey Starkweather. The class meets 6 p.m.-9 p.m. Wednesdays, May 27-July 29. The course fee is $55.
