Nationally known sustainable farmer speaks at CCCC-Chatham

Joel Salatin (center left), nationally known sustainable farmer and agricultural writer, and members of the public tour the Student Farm at Central Carolina Community College’s Chatham County Campus under the guidance of Robin Kohanowich (center, right), the college’s Sustainable Agriculture Programs coordinator. The June 30 tour preceded Salatin’s presentation at the college in which he shared his passion for and experience with sustainable farming. About 400 people came to hear him speak. Salatin's Polyface Farms, in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, is a working example of the potential for local food production and distribution to help solve the challenges of biosecurity, food-borne pathogens, energy, and humane husbandry. In his presentation, ‘Local Food to the Rescue,‘ Salatin spoke of his family’s use of environmentally enhancing farming practices and the importance and benefits of incorporating sustainable farming practices throughout the world. The college’s Natural Chef and Sustainable Agriculture programs, Carolina Farm Stewardship Association, and N.C. Tobacco Trust Fund Commission sponsored his appearance.
