Troy Byrd, who operated an automotive repair garage in Lillington for more than 50 years, has been honored by a new endowed scholarship at Central Carolina Community College. Byrd was an active member of the Automotive Service Association of North Carolina for many years and also served as president of the Independent Garage Owners of North Carolina. He passed away in 2003 at the age of 87. In honor of his service to the industry, the ASA-NC has established the Troy Byrd Scholarship with the Central Carolina Community College Foundation to benefit students in the Automotive Systems Technology program. On May 10, his widow, Hazel Byrd, visited the college’s Harnett County Campus for the announcement of the new scholarship. Pictured (from left) are CCCC President Bud Marchant; Hazel Byrd; Bill Tyson, friend and CCCC Harnett County provost; and Brenda and Reggie Denney, of Eden. Reggie Denney is a past board chairman of the national Automotive Service Association and a former president and vice president of the state ASA. For more information about the scholarship, contact the foundation at (919) 718-7231 or by email at dglover@cccc.edu.
