Huskins
About
The Huskins program is a partnership between Central Carolina Community College and the local school systems to provide high school students with the opportunity to take college courses. These technical and vocational courses are taught by CCCC instructors and are actual college courses that are offered specifically for high school students at no cost. Courses are scheduled during the regular high school day, allowing students to earn both high school and college credit. A Huskins program may be a semester in length, but most require a commitment from the student for an entire school year.
Courses are generally offered at each high school. Some courses may be taught on a CCCC campus; therefore, students are responsible for providing their own transportation. Students must also be at least 16 years old.
Huskins programs follow the public school schedule for all holiday, workdays, and inclement weather days.
Huskins courses can benefit a student in several ways:
- Save money: earn tuition-free college credits
- Accelerated time to college-degree completion
Apply
- The student should determine interest in program based on high school course guide. The student should understand that most Huskins programs require a full year-long commitment.
- Sign up for program during high school registration period.
- During the first week of class, the instructor will have the student complete a CCCC application for the Huskins courses. The instructor will complete the registration form to enroll the student in the courses.

FAQs
- Why are these courses called "Huskins Courses"?
- The Huskins program received its name from the Huskins Bill, legislation enacted by the NC General Assembly. The Huskins Bill was an amendment to North Carolina General Statute 115D-20(4) and enacted in 1983.
- When and where are the Huskins courses offered?
- Some Huskins program courses are offered at the high school during the school day. However, due to lab and equipment requirements, most Huskins programs are offered on one of CCCC's campuses.
- The classes follow the high school calendar in the case of holidays, teacher workdays, make-up days, and inclement weather closings. If the high school is in session, the college's classes are also in session. If the high school is NOT in session, the college classes will NOT meet. (Possible exception: Good Friday and Winter Holiday.)
- The classes typically meet during first or fourth block. Meeting times may be adjusted to allow for student travel time.
- Is transportation provided to and from the college campus?
- Students are responsible for transportation to and from class.
- How much does it cost?
- Tuition and fees are FREE to Huskins students. Textbooks for technical and vocational Huskins programs are provided by the local school system.
- What are the admission requirements?
- The college requires student to be 16 years of age by the start of classes. Students should demonstrate social maturity and a level of academic achievement to ensure success in college courses, as determined by a high school guidance counselor.
- What are the attendance requirements?
- A direct relationship exists between academic success and good school attendance. Students must adhere to the high school attendance policy and the college attendance policy.
- The college does not designate an absence as excused or unexcused. If a student chooses to attend a high school extracurricular event, such as a pep rally, that student will be counted absent in the college class.
- If a student must leave a class early to participate in a school athletic or other competition, the instructor will work with that student on a one-to-one basis. In all cases, students must communicate with the instructor in advance when special circumstances exist. The instructor will require documentation of school-related activities before allowing the student to leave early. Students will always be accountable for materials covered, due dates, and all assignments made during their absence.
- When do Huskins classes start and end?
- All Huskins classes taught on the high school or the college campuses follow the high school schedule. Exception: Huskins University Transfer classes in Lee County.
- Will the college credits earned transfer to other colleges?
- Credits earned for a college transfer course with a grade of 'C' or better may be transferred to another community college, public college or university in the UNC system. Additionally, many private colleges in NC accept these credits. Students must request a transcript to be sent to the college they attend.
- College credits earned through the community college do not guarantee admission to another college or university. Students should note the distinction between the college transfer courses that meet the requirements for general education core courses and those that meet elective requirements within a major.
- Credits earned for technical and vocational courses not covered under the NC Comprehensive Articulation Agreement will transfer to other community colleges, but not to a senior institution.
- The student should talk with the high school counselor and/or the CCCC Cooperative High School Programs Coordinator about specific transfer questions.
- What should I consider in deciding if Huskins courses are a good choice for me?
- Among other considerations, students should be committed to the extra time and effort required to be successful in college courses. They should understand that class attendance and participation is critical, consequently, they should not expect to be excused for high school activities. The grade they earn will be on their high school and CCCC transcript; therefore, they should be prepared to do their best. Students enrolling in Huskins classes will be treated as adults.
- Will Huskins courses meet high school graduation requirements?
- Most courses offered through cooperative agreements can be used as elective credits toward high school graduation requirements. Some courses may be used for specific subject/course requirements for high school graduation. The student should direct specific questions to the high school counselor
- College credits will be awarded to high school students upon successful completion of the course.
