Tracy Lynn Home

Downtown Pittsboro, Thelma Sugg Lane is so new it is not on Maquest! Drive to end of Brown Street and turn right, Tracy's home is the last home on the left- it's pink!

This 1100 SF stucco home, designed by SunGarden Houses and built by Chatham County Habitat for Humanity, is an excellent example of an affordable solar home. Active solar provides hot water and radiant floor heating to augment the passive solar concrete slab floor for thermal mass, extended roof overhang, and cross ventilation window design. The stucco exterior, constructed of Aerated Autoclave Concrete, eliminates the need for house wrap, insulation or siding. Barrels harvest rain water from the collection system atop the metal roof. All appliances are Energy Star. This home is located within easy walking distance of downtown Pittsboro. Tracy specified low VOC finishes and paints throughout the home, creating improved indoor air quality. The designers, Jim and Kathleen Jardine will be on hand to describe the design principles behind this passively heated and cooled home. Reps will also be on hand from Solar Consultants describing the radiant floor and solar thermal aspects of the home.

Green Door Design/Build and the Abundance Foundation have worked with and green energy experts Southern Energy Management and Rebekah & Stephen Hren of Carbon-Free Home to create an amazing off-grid "office of the future." Located within the heart of a green, sustainable office park in Pittsboro, this prototype of the off-grid office of the futureisoriented to make use of the sunwith both active solar electric and a passive solar air collector box. Nearly all of the wood used in this building was harvested from local and sustainable sources. The foam insulation creates a toasty warm space, requiring no electrical heat. Located at the Piedmont Biofuels Industrial Farm at Lorax Lane, off of HWY 64.

Alicia Ravetto & Paul Konove Home

This contemporary home, located off Hwy. 64 west of Jordan Lake, was designed and built by the owners. It features an active solar hot water and electric system. The passive solar design includes a thermal mass floor and fireplace, wide overhangs, and natural ventilation. Exterior walls are constructed with 2x6 framing, " Styrofoam sheathing, and dry pack blown cellulose for approximately R-24 insulation. For improved indoor air quality, the builder chose radiant heat, solid plywood cabinets, low/no VOC paints and sealers, and wood or decorative concrete floors (no carpet). Sustainable materials include recycled heart pine wood flooring, yellow pine trim (regional), and eastern cypress siding (regional). Come see how site location, design, and materials work together to create an aesthetic green built home.

Laura and Pierre Lauffer Home

Laura and Pierre Lauffer worked with a designer to create the green home of their dreams. Laura is the green building and renewable energy program director at CCCC where she shares information about sustainable materials and green building practices every day. The Lauffers chose to build their home with insulated precast panels for the basement and aerated autoclaved concrete for the remainder of the outside envelope. The geothermal system will assure super energy efficient heating and cooling, but the Lauffers hope to rarely use their HVAC system. The house was designed to allow for maximum cross-ventilation, passive solar shading and cooling through the roof-top cupola.

The metal roof is natural galvalume. The light color assures low solar heat gain and the fifty year warranty reduces the use for additonal re-roofing materials in the future. Metal roofing is also better suited to rainwater catchment systems, with higher water quality for garden irrigation.

The home features locally sourced and milled cedar siding and soffits. Renewable energy is part of the plan for the Lauffers including solar thermal and solar electric. The southern exposure, slope of the roof and pre plumbed system are waiting for the eventual installation. The Lauffers are working with Southern Energy Management to achieve Energy Star Certification and plan to achieve the 50% more efficient designation. This house is currently under construction and allowing visitors 'guts' view of green building design and engineering.

The active solar system is tied to the grid and a south-facing wall of windows with tile floors provides passive solar warmth. Renewable energy features include a solar-powered attic ventilation fan, Solatubes, and fluorescent lighting. A rain barrel catchment system harvests water. Many of the building materials were reused from the original house. Come visit and learn about selling generated electricity through NC Green Power, tax incentives for solar products, and tips for insulating older homes.
