Full-Time Cougar Champion of the Month!

October Cougar Champion: Kelly Burton

"Chef Burton provides excellent support and instruction for her students. She is always looking for new ways to reach out to the community to increase enrollment in the Culinary Program. This semester has been especially challenging due to low enrollment. Despite the challenges, Chef Burton ensures the students are getting the most from the practical experience of operating a weekly café while the campus and community have access to delicious food."

"Kelly has had a challenging semester with only two to three students while maintaining the Natural Chef Café. She not only ensures we have tasty meals during lunch, but she is also making sure her students are taken care of. Whenever you see her in the café, she smiles and never backs down from the challenges of running the kitchen. I wait all week to witness the fantastic masterpieces she has in store for us, and the students are becoming more proficient every day. I hope the committee highly considers Kelly Burton because she continuously goes over and beyond for the college and those she meets."

"Chef Kelly represents the mission and spirit of CCCC so well! Not only with her dedication to her students, but also by participating in events that help get CCCC and the Culinary Program noticed (in a positive way!) by the community. Fall of 2022 she has pulled off amazing feats of running the cafe, teaching classes and volunteering to spend an entire Sunday at Pepperfest representing CCCC. Faculty and staff, and special events, have benefited from the food made with care by Chef."

"This semester, Chef Burton has taken extra time with her students to ensure their success and she continues to contribute to positive climate at Chatham Main Campus by collaborating with others to provide themed lunches to coincide with Hispanic Heritage Month activities. Moreover, Chef Burton is also working with a couple of special-needs students to develop workforce skills in the industry to increase their independence as adults."

"Chef Kelly has gone out of her way to be welcoming to me as the farm manager here in my first year. Our relationship and food deliveries for the program has always been fun and informative for the students."

"Kelly's a real advocate for her program and for the College in general: both in person and on social media where she works to raise awareness of many different paths beyond her own. Here in Chatham, she makes lovely food with her students and shares it with the community through the Natural Chef Cafe, a real resource for campus community members, library patrons, and other Pittsboro residents. Along with teaching and mentoring her own students, she's connected to the campus more broadly. As an example, she recently reached out to me to ask how the Cafe could serve Early College students better, as she'd noticed that my flock of students were excited about some of the meal options, but that price was a barrier for them."

"She is always willing to help out even if it's not on her campus. She goes above and beyond for her students."

"She is a very hard, dedicated and passionate instructor. She makes sure students have the skills for success in the kitchen and life in general. This semester has been very challenging as she only had three students in which one has special needs (IDD). With no previous training working with a special needs student, she produces great quality lunches for the public every week. A couple weeks into the semester one of the students withdrew due to personal issues, so Kelly was down to one student and and one special needs student. Things didn't change a bit—she adapted and continued teaching and serving as usual. With the lack of students and high demand, she developed a value menu so high school students could enjoy the Cafe more for a lesser lunch price. She truly knows how to conquer and overcome what is given to her and make the best out of it. All her students tell others incoming students about her as she is very firm regarding cleanliness standards and work ethic, etc. For this reason, many students call her their favorite instructor because she gives tough love because she cares so dearly."

Moustache Movember

November is Men's Health Awareness Month with International Men's Day falling on Nov. 19. Men's Health Awareness Month is dedicated to bringing awareness to a wide range of men's health issues. Globally, men die on average six years earlier than women, and for reasons that are largely preventable.

In honor of men's health awareness, we deemed November be Moustache Movember—distributing measuring tapes and asking, "How does your moustache measure up?" We had fun visiting our three main campuses, and promoting men's health awareness with employees by having fun with moustache photo props.

Thank you for your help sharing the great memories created with our Cougar family!

Pianist Ethan Uslan Visits CCCC

"Good afternoon, everybody, my name is Ethan. I'm your piano player today." Before Ethan Uslan even spoke those initial words, he introduced himself and his ragtime style with a dazzling rendition of Fats Waller's "Picadilly," a number that brought a storm of enthusiastic cheers right out of the gate.

Many in his audience probably never heard anything like it before. Uslan, who was praised by the Chicago Tribune a few years ago as "an accomplished pianist with a deep understanding of far-flung performance practices," was appearing on Oct. 25 at Temple Theatre. The free concert was organized by Central Carolina Community College as part of a series bringing in accomplished artists and scholars to share ideas with university transfer students and create an intellectual discussion.

It was an eclectic group. Some of the students were studying the Harlem Renaissance, a topic directly on point given this style of music, but others came from courses in music appreciation, popular culture and American history. There were older community members in the audience as well; many of these Academic and Cultural Enrichment Series events are open to the public. But for younger students right out of high school, the entire idea of ragtime seemed obscure.

New Department Names

The Onboarding and Advising Division has worked to ensure that the names of departments accurately reflect the services those offices provide to both students and employees. After months of discussions with multiple stakeholders across campus, the following departments in the Onboarding and Advising Division have officially been renamed:

  • Admissions → Student Onboarding and Success
  • Registrar’s Office → Student Records and Registrar

In addition to these new department names, Student Services has renamed one of their departments to prevent confusion with overlapping titles/department names:

  • Student Onboarding and Outreach → Student Outreach and Recruitment

While department names have changed, the core functions of each of these departments have not changed. Click here for a brief summary of the core functions of these departments.

Each of these departments will be working with Marketing and Business Services over the next several months to update their names on webpages, signage, printed materials, etc. We appreciate your patience as we work through these changes. We will continue to work toward making our college’s processes, services, and resources as clear as possible for our college community.
