CCCC Employee of the Month!

June Full-Time Employee of the Month: Adam Wade

The qualities that make Adam deserving are dedicated, compassionate, and flexible. Adam is dedicated to the students and the strategic plan that serves them. Adam is compassionate to the diverse population that we work with and the circumstances that surround them. Adam is flexible when it comes to situations that arise with students that are out of the norm. One example is taking on proctoring a student who needed testing outside of normal business hours so that they could get registered for classes.

Adam is always there with a smile to greet and help students. No matter what is needed he is able to jump in and help students. Adam is the same when it comes to the employees he leads. He is always understanding, compassionate, flexible and kind.

Adam Wade

Director of Admissions

How long have you worked for CCCC?
I have been with CCCC for a little over six years. I started in April 2015.

What brought you to CCCC?
I was hired as Lead Success Coach in 2015 and was really impressed with all the innovative ways that CCCC was supporting students. This is also what I love most about CCCC - all the people that are striving to ensure that we are supporting students at the highest level possible.

Describe what you do for CCCC.
In my current role, I oversee admissions and new student advising and registration. Admissions is also responsible for planning and implementing new student orientation, managing and coordinating the admissions process for all competitive entry programs, reviewing and advising students based on MAP Embark Assessment results, and placement testing. I also assist in coordinating the Behavioral Assessment Team, CCCC's Safe Zone program, CC CARES initiative, and help coordinate the New Student Success Questionnaire.

Where were you born?
Franklin, Virginia

Where did you grow up?
Conway, N.C.

Where do you live now?
Raleigh

Educational credentials?
Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies, Minor in Leadership Studies, University of North Carolina Wilmington. Master of Arts in College Student Development, Appalachian State University.

Tell us about your family!
I have been married for five years to my husband, Matthew. We have two cats, they are brothers, Orin and Shiloh. My parents still live in Conway and are both retired. I have one sister that is a nurse. She is married and lives in Willow Springs.

What are some of your hobbies or other interests outside of CCCC?
I enjoy long-distance running, cooking, gardening and tending to my plants and herbs, and reading.

What is your favorite meal?
Too many to list here. A couple in the TOP 10 that I will highlight - my mom's spaghetti or lasagna (equally amazing), my grandma's chicken breast casserole, mac and cheese, and peanut butter (is that a meal?).

CCCC Employee of the Month!

July Full-Time Employee of the Month: Cristy Holmes

Compassion, patience, caring, professionalism...these are just a few [of the qualities that make Cristy deserving of this award]. Cristy approaches her work firmly focused on student success. She routinely handles difficult student situations and works with other faculty and staff to find a solution to help each student start or continue their studies at CCCC. She is driven to make the college work better for everyone and has been instrumental in helping us identify new resources, to improve existing ones, and to do this so that more students can be successful. One example - she has invested significant time and effort into making sure that our class waitlists are working well for everyone and helping students gain access to more classes.

Cristy just does what is needed, whether that is supporting success coaching, orienting new employees, serving on multiple hiring committees, advising students, developing a new OER course in Spanish...she is just willing to jump in. She has a ton of ideas about improving advising, our technology around transfer evaluations, and even a rather creative approach to improving our enhanced transfer partnerships. She embraces her role as someone who helps other faculty and staff be successful and as such, she may be a little behind the scenes and not everyone may recognize the positive changes she is helping bring about at CCCC.

Dr. Cristy Holmes

Associate Dean, University Transfer and Advising

How long have you worked for CCCC?
I've been here for a year and three months, but I've been working in the NCCC System for 13 years.

What brought you to CCCC?
The job, the mission and strategic plan, and the people!

Describe what you do for CCCC.
Working for the Transfer and Advising Division gives me the opportunity to work closely with Dean Byington on a variety of initiatives pertaining to our transfer degrees, our co-admissions partnerships, and academic advising. I enjoy collaborating with our division chairs and faculty on best practices for student success. I also support the College Success Center, Chair the Curriculum Review Committee, and teach Spanish courses.

Where were you born?
Elkins, West Virginia - Where I earned the title of loudest baby ever born.

Where did you grow up?
Buckhannon, West Virginia

Where do you live now?
Sanford (I recently moved here from Durham)

Educational credentials?
Bachelor of Arts, Foreign Languages, West Virginia University. Master of Arts, Latin American Literature, West Virginia University. Ed.S and Ed.D, Community College Executive Leadership.

Tell us about your family!
My parents, Jerry and Linda, are still in W.Va. I have two older sisters, Carmen and Kim. My husband, Jay, and I are expecting our first baby (girl!) at the end of October. We also have two crazy pups, Luna and Luca.

What are some of your hobbies or other interests outside of CCCC?
I love everything outside, from paddleboarding to fishing. I'm also known for adopting needy dogs. I studied abroad in Cuba, Mexico, and Brazil. I led studies abroad to Costa Rica. And I've been to Japan, Panama, Colombia and a few other countries for fun.

What is your favorite meal?
Oh, that's too hard. I love food. I love to experiment in the kitchen. One of my favorite local eateries is Fonda Lupita.

Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
I'm so happy to be a part of CCCC. Thank you for welcoming me virtually last year. If I haven't met you in person yet, I hope to soon. And, thank you for the honor of Employee of the Month!

Part-Time CCCC Employee of the Month!

July Part-Time Employee of the Month: Daniel Carillo

Daniel Carillo, Custodian, is always polite, kind and respectful. Daniel is helpful and quick to act when he sees that someone needs assistance. Daniel is also very humble, considerate and trustworthy.

Daniel works quietly, usually behind the scenes, but he is always observant. On numerous occasions I would park at the front door of the building to bring in food, drinks, etc. and he always walks out to help. Then he will always ask if there is anything else I can do to help you. He has gone upstairs a number of times and brought me a cooler of ice for my meetings.

If Daniel sees something that needs to be done, he always goes the extra mile and gets it done. His job is a vital and crucial position at CCCC.

Promises, Promises!

Despite some minor lingering confusion between the Career & College Promise program (free college classes for current high school students) and the Central Carolina Promise/K14 program (free college classes for recent high school graduates, through 14th grade), both programs are charging confidently into the post-COVID world. Promise/K14 has undergone some exciting changes recently, such as:

a) removal of the full-time enrollment requirement.
b) approval of funding coverage for summer classes (between first year and second year of the program).
c) approval of student entry at any time within their five-semester eligibility window (fall semester after high school graduation, then spring/summer/fall/spring).

There are 327 students still enrolled in the program from our 2020 high school graduate cohort. For the 2021 graduates, we currently have 380 students who have applied as viable participants and, of those, 119 who have already completed their enrollment checklist. The "priority deadlines" for the program were all in July, but eligible students can still be admitted to the program even if they missed these suggested checkpoints. Next up is reviewing and approving fall class schedules, and then disbursing funds to the students after classes have started (this should be a similar timeline to Financial Aid's disbursement processes).

For more information about the Central Carolina Promise/K14 program, please contact Mary Schmid Carter at (919) 718-7542 or promisek14@cccc.edu.

For more information about the Career & College Promise program, please contact Dr. Sara Newcomb at snewcomb@cccc.edu or any of our illustrious CCP advisors, located within our service area high schools.

Veterans Upward Bound New Staff Announcement

Hi. I'm Dr. Jen Servi-Roberts, and I'm so excited to start as the new Director of Veterans Upward Bound and Military Affiliated Initiatives at CCCC.

Helping veterans succeed is a personal passion for me. My husband is an Operation Enduring Freedom veteran and about to leave for his third deployment. So while I have not served in the military, I am very familiar with military culture and supporting successful transitions back into civilian life. I also bring nine years of experience with the North Carolina Community College System - I worked at Johnston Community College (JCC) as a Spanish instructor, Director of Business Education Programs, and Associate VP of Business and Applied Technologies. At JCC, I was also the lead for the Task Force to support veteran and military-affiliated students, and I look forward to using those skills here.

When I'm not working, I enjoy spending time outside with my husband, two daughters, and our two dogs and trying out new recipes for my family. I also speak Spanish fluently, and have lived in various parts of the United States.

I look forward to working with all of you. Please feel free to reach out to me.
