CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!

October Employee of the Month: Stormy Mascitelli

October Employee of the Month

I'm nominating Stormy Mascitelli for innovation in data access. Stormy is filled with curiosity and a love for finding answers to tough questions. She's been providing CCCC with answers to their data questions for 4.5 years now. She does it with a smile and with the goal of Learning First in her mind. She knows that the data provided will help faculty, staff, department heads, deans, and administrators make important data-informed decisions. The information provided has quietly helped the college decisions on things like which academic programs to pursue, equity initiatives, QEP planning, and many, many more.

Her main goal over the last 4.5 years ago was to create data dashboards. Data dashboards are a data visualization tool that automatically updates data daily. This is the white whale that many in the institutional research profession aspire to achieve. It's an easy feat for a four-year school, but it's an elusive goal for most community colleges. The issue is how do you automate a process in order to provide data in real time? It's not easy.

Stormy recently helped to facilitate and create four data dashboards for CCCC. They include retention, course-fill rates, enrollment, and FTE data. The data is updated daily (midmorning) and can be filtered in multiple ways. The process to automate the dashboards includes creating an automated Informer report that automatically downloads to the shared drive, a SAS report that analyzes the data automatically, and programming Microsoft's PowerBI to automatically upload data each morning. Each step requires a great deal of technical knowledge. Thanks to her tenacity and vision, the real-time data provided will help our college grow even more via data-informed decision making. For these reasons, I enthusiastically nominate Stormy Mascitelli for Employee of the Month.

And if you need one more reason to make her employee of the month, Stormy is also an amazingly kind, patient, and calm supervisor. She actively works to develop the skills, knowledge, and abilities of those that report to her. She is always available to answer questions whenever needed. CCCC and the IER department are lucky to have her.

Harnett Library News

September was a busy month at the Harnett Library. Our biggest event, Banned Book Week, brought in many students and patrons seeking to learn more about the censorship that happens here in America. Students learned that many of their favorite books, such as Lord of the Rings and The Lorax, have been banned or challenged throughout the years.

With midterms around the corner, the Library staff will be bringing fall cheer to the patrons this month. For Halloween, the library will be decked out with spooky decorations, and our scariest books and movies will be out on display. If you are looking for a scary book to get in the Halloween mood, or want costume ideas, come to the Library and check out our collection! And on Oct. 31, if you stop by you may just find a treat (...or trick) waiting for you!

Red Clay Review

From the 2017 issue of the Red Clay Review, "The Ocean on a November Morning, Armistice Day" by Mary Barnard.

After the sharp midnight blue line of last night's horizon,
the clouds and water a grayscale, no magenta, no cyan,
where the ship's deck slick with morning rain and fog,
the yellow uniform heavy on the backs of men who man

the mast and riggings. A couple, hand in hand, a bag
of shells swinging against his jeans, break the spell
of an endless empty beach. Last night a mother
and her doll-sized girl played volleyball under the net,

while the father made a chair of his arm for another
even smaller girl. Despite the wind, she gripped onto
a very tall feather as if she had just signed something
important with its quill, something triumphant.
