CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!
Congratulations June Employee of the Month: Jessica Rogers Dickens
Jessica Rogers Dickens has served as the Director of CCCC's two TRiO Student Support Services programs since Sept. 2015. During that time, she has made intentional efforts and succeeded in building partnerships across departments and all of our campuses for the benefit of her programs and students.
She is involved in several committees, has made an effort to get to know and build relationships with many colleagues across the college, and she always strives to both learn from others and contribute to the work of the college. She brings together a team of outstanding professionals on a daily basis in service of CCCC's low-income and first-generation students and students with disabilities.
Her leadership intentionally reflects CCCC's mission, vision, and values. With both her programs and students, she is careful to follow and respect the policies and procedures of the college, and over the past several years has handled many delicate situations positively and professionally. Finally, as a dedicated member of the national TRiO community she has been a great asset to CCCC's TRiO team and vocal advocate for TRiO programs and students across North Carolina.

What brought you to CCCC?
The newly funded TRiO SSS programs.
Describe what you do for CCCC.
I provide leadership and administrative oversight to both staff and the 260 first-generation, low-income and students with disabilities program participants. Our programs provide academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and motivates students toward the successful completion of their postsecondary education. The goal of SSS is to increase the college retention, graduation, and four-year transfer rates of its participants.
Where were you born?
Durham.
Where did you grow up?
Durham.
Educational credentials?
Bachelor's from Winston-Salem State University, Master's from North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, and currently enrolled in doctoral program at North Carolina State University.
Where do you live now?
Greensboro.
Tell us about your family!
Fun fact is that my now husband, as of April 27, 2018, and I started dating because we sparked up a conversation about my new position at CCCC. From then on, we have been sharing life's adventures together.
What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
Travel is a pastime I have come to thoroughly enjoy. I like seeing different places and trying new places to eat.
What is your favorite meal?
No favorite meal, but favorite types of food are Italian and Mexican.
Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
I'm so honored to be named employee of the month. This is exciting to have recognition from colleagues. Being an advocate for first generation college students is no easy task, but having people across campus who support the mission makes this a labor of love. Dear Colleagues:
I am thrilled to welcome Jairo McMican to Central Carolina Community College as Dean of Student Learning.
Jairo comes to us from Durham Technical Community College where he served as Director of Admissions and Advising Services overseeing college recruitment, advising, admissions, and placement testing. He has experience as a community college advisor, instructor, and as a transcript evaluation specialist. He served as assistant director of admissions at North Carolina Central University and admissions counselor at UNC-Asheville. Jairo is enrolled in the Adult and Community College doctoral program at North Carolina State University, and he has an M.S. in Organizational and Strategic Leadership and a B.S. in Psychology from South Carolina State University.
During the search process, we emphasized the need for an equity-minded leader who will lead a collaborative, college-wide effort to help close achievement gaps in learning, access, and success outcomes across our one-college model. If you did not have the chance to interact with Jairo while he interviewed on campus, I think you will find the combination of his knowledge, passion, skills, and experiences to be an excellent fit to help address challenges and create new opportunities to improve student outcomes.
Director of Secondary Partnerships
Hello Everyone,
I am very pleased to welcome Dr. Sara Newcomb to CCCC as our new Director of Secondary Partnerships.
Sara worked at Gardner-Webb University as Director of Community College Partnerships in which she formed and facilitated partnerships between community colleges and Gardner-Webb, worked on articulation agreements specifically related to AAS pathways, and managed all degree program updates for the university. She has served as Associate Dean and Director of Advising, the Advising Center Coordinator, Academic Advisor, and as an Admissions Counselor. Her doctorate research focused on developing partnerships and bringing about continuous improvement through practice and research. She brings a wealth of experience in higher education and will excel in the Director of Secondary Partnerships role.

2017-2018 Leadership Sanford Class
Felicia Crittenden, of Central Carolina Community College, was among the graduates of the 2017-2018 Leadership Sanford class.
Gold Certificate of Safety Achievement
Ben Rankin, Safety Officer, and Trinity Faucett, Director of HR, attended the Department of Labor Safety Awards on June 12 and accepted a Gold Certificate of Safety Achievement on behalf of CCCC from Honorable Cherie K. Berry, State of NC Commissioner of Labor. The award is based on the number of employees, hours worked, and number of injuries reported.
Adult Education Resource Specialist Certification
Dr. Nutan Varma, Lead ESL instructor for Harnett County's College and Career Readiness program, was awarded an Adult Education Resource Specialist Certification from Appalachian State University on June 1. Congratulations!

NACADA: The Global Community for Academic Advising is an international association that is committed to the success of students at colleges and universities around the globe. Academic Advising Today, NACADA's electronic publication, is distributed quarterly to our over 13,000 members around the world.

Dunn Enrichment Center Collaboration
Below are photos from our recent collaboration project for the Dunn Enrichment Center. Marketing, HCI, Harnett Maintenance, and Business Services all were a part of this update to our site.
Thanks to all for their creative efforts and a special thanks to Christa Mashburn, Crystal Smith, the Harnett Maintenance Team, our custodial staff, and HCI for making our project such a success.
With support from Provost, Dr. Jon Matthews and the HCI team, we started with wood frames and then went through a photo selection process with the help of our Marketing team.
Ideas were discussed with Marketing for our new retractable banner for The Dunn Center and Senior Activities Center.
Other ideas were presented to Business Services and through their creative design and use of newly obtained equipment, they brought our vision together and even made a trip to our site to complete the project with the help of our Harnett Maintenance team.
We were so pleased to have the project completed in time to host the Chairperson's Retreat held at our site in May.
The site feels more collegiate and colorful with these new additions to our buildings and we hope our clients and staff will enjoy our new look!

July Outcomes & Assessment Coaching Visit
CCCC was selected out of a competitive application process to receive a free one-day NILOA coaching visit on July 12th. The National Institute for Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA) and the Lumina Foundation are working together to offer coaching visits to improve student learning and assessment practices at selected institutions. Embedded Librarian Program Update
The Embedded Librarian Program will be changing its name in the new fiscal year to become the "Online Librarian Program." This change is simply to facilitate a clearer understanding of the program's role in online learning at CCCC.

Summer reading at the Lee and Harnett Libraries runs through Aug. 3rd. The Chatham Community Library summer reading runs through July 31st. Chatham Community Library Events
In honor of LGBT+ identifying communities, Governor Roy Cooper has proclaimed June as NC LGBT Pride Month. The Chatham Community Library in Pittsboro played a role in highlighting the special contributions of the LGBT+ community to arts and literature and hosted a discussion of LGBT+ rights and advocacy opportunities across the state.
Events included screenings of LGBT+ themed feature films and displays throughout the Library that highlight LGBT+ literature, as well as books by LGBT+ authors. On June 26, Kori Case of the LGBT Center of Raleigh presented a program on the LGBT+ community of central NC and a discussion of issues for LGBT+ individuals living in rural communities.

Parking Lot Closure
The parking lot between the Science Building and Budd Hall on Lee Main Campus is now closed due to the replacement of the Science Building roof. The parking lot is expected to reopen in July.
National Safety Month
From the Health, Safety, and Security Committee
June is National Safety Month. The Health, Safety, and Security Committee want to help you focus on reducing injury at work, on the road, and in our homes and communities. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, slips, trips and falls make up the majority of accidents, which account for 15% of all accidental deaths per year, the second-leading cause behind motor vehicles and about 25% of all reported injury claims per year. Please see the attached poster for some helpful tips.

TRiO Student Support Services Graduation Banquet
On Monday, May 7, TRiO Student Support Services and TRiO Student Support Services STEM & Health Sciences hosted a graduation banquet for our 2017-2018 graduates. This event was held at Maggiano's Little Italy in Durham. Our graduates and guests were invited to enjoy a four-course meal, followed by an awards ceremony. TRiO Student Support Services was honored to have Bianka Stumpf attend this event as our guest speaker for the evening. She addressed our graduates with words of encouragement and reflection of what they have accomplished. Each TRiO graduate received a TRiO Alumni pin and program certificate. We are so proud of our graduates and all of their accomplishments!

We regretfully want to inform everyone of the passing of a past CCCC instructor, John C. Wicker. John C. Wicker, 92, of Carthage, passed away on June 23. Mr. Wicker retired from the A&P after 35 years and from teaching Art at CCCC after 25 years. Memorial contributions can be made to the Sanford Brush and Pallet Club, P.O. Box 4886, Sanford, N.C. 27332
We sadly inform everyone of the passing of Lorraine Whitaker's father-in-law, James M. Whitaker "Coy," 75, of Sanford. The funeral service was held at Calvary Missionary Methodist Church with Rev. Curtis Norris officiating. Memorials may be made, in Coy's memory, to Calvary Missionary Methodist Church, 185 Calvary Church Road, Sanford, N.C. 27332.
