IN THIS ISSUE:

CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!

Congratulations December Employee of the Month:
Dr. Linda Scuiletti

December Employee of the Month

Dr. Scuiletti led the SACSCOC efforts with unwavering optimism and commitment to improvement. She has inspired those around her to continuously improve their departments for the benefit of our students and college. SACSCOC's off-site and on-site visit had phenomenal results under her leadership. I am nominating Dr. Linda Scuiletti for Employee of the Month because of her amazing leadership during our SACSCOC Decennial Reaffirmation process. Although I think Dr. Scuiletti can be nominated for all of the strategic plan values, I'm focusing on excellence. Our CCCC excellence value is defined as "We set, expect and maintain high educational standards consistent with the needs of the students, region and changing workforce." Linda's work at the college is the epitome of excellence. She had a vision of zero findings from the very beginning of the reaffirmation process. Through her intense dedication, too many late hours to count, a Christmas break devoted to the reaffirmation, and a lot of HARD WORK from our CCCC colleagues, she led CCCC to ZERO FINDINGS! Thank you Linda!

Dr. Linda Scuiletti
Vice President of Assessment, Planning & Research/SACSCOC Accreditation Liason

I would like to accept this honor on behalf of the IE Team, whose outstanding leadership and TEAM effort over the past three years resulted in our successful SACSCOC reaffirmation. Therefore I'm including a picture of all (make that most) of us:

SACSCOC Team

Derrick Dupuis, Amy Gustavson, Stormy Mascitelli, Linda Scuiletti, Brenda Keller, Kelly Hall Baird (not pictured: Liz Rodriguez)

We're originally from all over the East Coast, ranging from New York, Vermont, and Pennsylvania to right here in Sanford, to Puerto Rico! We also each came to IE by way of another career - Derrick Dupuis was previously a bio-statistician; Amy Gustavson, a librarian; Stormy Mascitelli, a Student Services specialist; Linda Scuiletti, an engineer, instructor, and chair; Brenda Keller, a high school teacher; Liz Rodriguez, an IT specialist; and Kelly Hall Baird, a paralegal.

Brenda, whose actual job is teaching Developmental Math, has been here at CCCC the longest, more than 10 years. She's the only one of us who was here for the previous SACSCOC Decennial. She left IE seven years ago, but we've never quite let go of her - she's just that awesome! I've enjoyed every day of my seven years at CCCC, and the rest of us have been here for a few years or less. Between us we have nine children and four grandchildren. :) Stormy's gorgeous twins are the youngest - they just turned one!

Our role at CCCC encompasses long-range institutional planning, institutional research/decision support, outcomes assessment, and everyone's favorite - SACSCOC accreditation. :) We actually LOVE SACSCOC accreditation (most days) - because the entire focus is on high quality standards and continuous improvement in service to our students, whom we hold close to our hearts. I am proud as can be of this outstanding team - together we poured our hearts and souls into the recent Decennial Reaffirmation, each contributing from his or her unique talents, skills, and expertise. Although we're very proud that our collective effort resulted in a perfect score from SACSCOC at the recent On-Site Review, we're more proud that the process helped CCCC make many many improvements in service to our students.

I treasure this team and each and every member of it - this moment in time is precious. Together we can accomplish vastly more than any one of us could achieve individually. Our collective efforts and the way we support each other and care about each other reminds me of a wonderful Rudyard Kipling verse:

  1. NOW this is the law of the jungle,
  2.   as old and as true as the sky,
  3. And the wolf that shall keep it may prosper,
  4.   but the wolf that shall break it must die.
  5. As the creeper that girdles the tree trunk,
  6.   the law runneth forward and back;
  7. For the strength of the pack is the wolf,
  8.   and the strength of the wolf is the pack.

This really applies to ALL of us at CCCC as TOGETHER we tackle the challenging and rewarding work of helping our students transform their lives.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC

Community Service at Harnett Manor

On Saturday, Dec. 9, the Upward Bound Math and Science students participated in a community service event at Harnett Manor. During this time, our participants were reminded of the importance of giving back to the community during this holiday season. Students made holiday cards to give out to residents and sang festive carols. Harnett Manor welcomed us with open arms and the residents were excited to see us. A much as the experience meant to the Harnett Manor residents, it was just as meaningful for our students. Upon reflect of the service project, one student remarked, "I really enjoyed that, and can't wait until next year!"

TRiO Student Support Services Attends NC State and North Carolina Museum of Art

On Friday, Nov. 14, TRiO Student Support Services and TRiO Student Support Services STEM & Health Sciences participants visited NC State for a transfer information session and campus tour. This presentation and tour was tailored toward students interested in transferring to NC State. We also visited the TRiO Student Support Services program at NC State where we met with their TRiO Student Ambassadors and TRiO Staff. Here, the students learned about the NC State TRiO program and the specific services they offer.

After our visit to NC State, we attended College Night at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh. At this event, college students were admitted for free to participate in the night's activities and events. The theme was Decades College Night focusing on five decades of fashion. Activities included admission to Inspiring Beauty: 50 Years of Ebony Fashion Fair, music, spoken word performances, dance performances from Fusion Dance Crew at NC State and Kamikaze Dance Crew from UNC Chapel Hill, and refreshments. We also visited the permanent collections exhibit.

If you have students interested in transferring or are wanting to encourage a cultural experience, we highly suggest taking a trip to Raleigh and visiting these locations. It was a hit with our students and offered something for everyone!

TRiO Student Support Services and Students Support Services STEM and Health Sciences are two federally-funded programs through the U.S. Department of Education that provide specialized services for students who are low-income, first generation, or have a disability. If you know of a student that could benefit from our program's services, please refer them by e-mailing sss@cccc.edu or calling 919-718-7567.

News From The CCCC Family

It is with a very heavy heart that we inform everyone of the passing of Ashley Voss' son Riley. Riley Evander Voss, 6, of Sanford, passed away peacefully on Dec. 2, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

In November of 2016, Riley was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. He fought this battle heroically and with tremendous courage until his passing. Riley attended Grace Christian Child Development Center and J Glenn Edwards Elementary School in Sanford and cherished the time he spent with his teachers and fellow students. He loved to learn about dinosaurs and had aspirations of one day becoming a paleontologist. Riley was very intelligent with a quick wit and was a talented artist. He will be remembered for his sweet soul and the compassion he showed toward others.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Michael Mosier Defeat DIPG Foundation, P.O. Box 34277 Bethesda, Md. 20827, or to the Team Blaise Foundation, P.0. Box 1031, West End, N.C. 27376.
