He is diligent in his duties in striving to keep the college website up-to-date and informative as it serves as a great window of our college to the outside world. He has served on various college committees. Most importantly, he is generous with his time to assist his co-workers in various ways. Morgan Steele is a shining light in providing his assistance in helping our college, our faculty and staff, and our students to be successful in its mission. CCCC is fortunate to have such a dedicated employee who has excellence and integrity at the forefront of his service.

Morgan Steele
Director of Web and Creative Strategy

Q.   How long have you worked for CCCC?
A.   Since April 2006
Q.   Describe what you do for CCCC.
A.   As mom would say, I water the plants and anything else they ask me to do! And thank goodness we don't have any plants in the office! I spend a lot of my time working on the college website and consulting on print and social media for the college.
Q.   Where were you born?
A.   Vincennes, Indiana
Q.   Where did you grow up?
A.   Who told you I grew up?? That's not the story I usually hear!
Q.   Educational credentials?
A.   BFA in Art from UNCG. It gives me the perfect excuse ... I don't know, I was an art major!!
Q.   Where do you live now?
A.   Raleigh
Q.   Tell us about your family!
A.   I've been married to my beautiful and smart wife Jenn for a little more than 11 years and we have a dog, Dunkel a clumsy beagle lab mix that kind of reminds me of Eeyore after four pots of coffee.
Q.   What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
A.   Homebrewing and the craft culture! There is something majestic about combining art and science in a process that is as old as the hills and trying to do new things, combine new ingredients and revive historical recipes that can't be found in the store. Not to mention the four beer taps in the living room and the long line of neighbors coming out the door!
Q.   What superhero power would you most like to have?
A.   I would be very happy to have flight, x-ray vision, or the ability to turn off someone's radio at a stop light.
Q.   Which actor would portray you in a movie about your life?
A.   Apparently Zach Galifianakis. During a trip to New York (like a bad cliche) my wife and I were walking along the shore looking at the Statue of Liberty when a teen walked up to us and before he could launch into his sales pitch about the candy bar in his hand, his eyes went wide and all he could say was a stuttering "Are you him?" After calling his buddies over we figured out who he was talking about, shook a couple hands, took a few pictures, and we were on our way!
Q.   What are some of your favorite things?
A.   Cooking, Fishing, Beer, and Design
Q.   What would be your last meal?
A.   I'm not sure exactly the food, but I would want to make it at home with my teacher and cooking buddy by my side, mom! For as long as I can remember I've been in the kitchen helping mom cook. "How much of this do I put in?" I'd ask. "Whatever looks good" was always the response I got. To this day, I can't follow a recipe without putting in "Whatever looks good!"

WOW! WHAT A TEAM!

Faculty Member of the Year: Bianka Stumpf

Faculty Member of the Year

Bianka Stumpf is an excellent instructor as evident in her dynamic, but practical, hands-on teaching style, her enthusiasm and energy for teaching, and her personal interest in the welfare of each of her students. She puts a great deal of time and effort into her lessons by integrating costumes, music, food, and other extensions. She has built all of her classes to integrate primary source documents, controversial debates/case studies, and current events to make the material more relevant and engaging. She exercises a variety of management techniques considering the high percentage of LEC and CCP students in her classes.

Staff Member of the Year: Tamara Joyner

Tamara Joyner has a true heart for students and goes out of the way to remind herself, and everyone working with her, why we do the things that we do. In every way she can, she looks for ways to help students. In addition to her dedication, Tamara is kind to faculty and staff and patient in their endeavors to navigate business office policies and procedures. She is always willing to stop what she is doing to walk someone through the correct way to perform whatever they are trying to accomplish. Tamara has high expectations for documentation and expenditure compliance (such is necessary for the multi-million dollar budget she manages), but she performs her duties in such a warm way that everyone wants to meet those expectations. By working to keep processes compliant and efficient, Tamara ensures the continued operation of the college and maximizes the resources available for serving students.

She gives over and above the amount of time required for office hours and helping students.

CCCC Holds STEM Workshops

Our Upward Bound Math and Science students enjoyed Central Carolina Community College this summer. Students participated in some remarkable STEM workshops conducted by CCCC instructors.

STEM Workshops

The first week our students enjoyed Computer Technology with Walter Choi, Lasers and Photonics with Gary Beasley, and Sustainability Technology with Andrew McMahan. During this week, students made their very own game on an Android device, name tags with lasers, and learned that vegetable oil can be used to fuel a car.

STEM Workshops

The second week students were able to participate in five more workshops, Engineering Technology with Trevor Bradian, Health and Fitness Science with Carl Bryan and Constance Boahn (Aerial Acrobatics Instructor), Health Information Technology with Denise Martin, and Environmental Science with Mary Watson. Students made their own designs with the 3D printer, tested water and soil, learned about nutrition and different ways to exercise, and learned about different parts of the body and their functions.

STEM Workshops

Our students have had an amazing two weeks on all three of our campuses and with our CCCC instructors. A big "Thank You" goes out to Central Carolina for being part of our UBMS students' educational growth.

What's happening with My Academic Pathway?

QEP

Over the last few months the QEP team has been in full swing in getting the official QEP document for SACSCOC written. With the help of Kelly Klug, the document is now in final review form. The QEP Co-Chairs, Scott Byington and Constance Boahn, and new QEP coordinator, Katherine Meadows, have officially sent the draft document for the Quality Enhancement Plan out to department chairs for review and asked them to send it out to all of the faculty in their area for review as well. The document in its final form will go to SACSCOC on Sept. 1. In September, the co-chairs and coordinator will meet with our committee chair in preparation for the SACSCOC team's visit in late October.

The team has also implemented a successful pilot of the second of the major components for admissions: the Career Decision Inventory, used to determine a student's readiness to make that all-important career decision. The team is working on the final digital version of the RIASEC/CDI for implementation this November to be used with incoming Spring 2018 students. The advising pilot is also in full swing this fall. The results from the pilot will shape our advising best practices going forward and our professional development event next spring.

Look for more exciting news concerning My Academic Pathway soon!

Health & Fitness Science signs articulation with Appalachian State University

"I am very excited for our Health and Fitness Science students for this new articulation agreement. It provides yet another pathway for our students to continue their education after obtaining an Associate in Applied Science degree here at Central Carolina," said Carl Bryan, who noted that the CCCC Health and Fitness Science program also has articulation agreements with UNC-Wilmington and N.C. Wesleyan College.

"The support of our Health and Fitness Science curriculum is overwhelming at ASU, and they have provided a seamless transfer for our Associate in Applied Science students to enter into their pursuit of a Bachelor's degree at ASU. The work we are doing in the classroom and labs at CCCC works in concert with what ASU is doing in their Bachelor's degree in Exercise Science."

For more information on the CCCC Health and Fitness Science program, contact Program Director Carl Bryan at 919-718-7554 or by email at cbryan@cccc.edu.

    PERSONNEL NOTES

    A Heartfelt Thank You

    Dear CCCC Family,
Thank you so much for all the cards, flowers, prayers, phone calls, visits, and the leave time that you so graciously donated during my injury, surgeries, and this on-going recovery period. There are simply not enough words to adequately express my appreciation to you for all that you have done. God Bless each and everyone of you. You are awesome! Can't wait to get back and be with you all again!

    Betty Carter

To All My Friends at CCCC

    My Friends,
My family and I would like to thank you for the beautiful floral arrangement sent to us during the recent loss of my dear mother. We also deeply appreciate your cards, visits, food, and kind words to us during such a sad time. My mother was a staunch advocate and fan of CCCC and education in general, and she was always so proud of the College's achievements in helping others reach their academic goals. She was especially proud of the fact that I was an employee here and had a part in its work of helping others. We will definitely miss her.

Many thanks again for your kind expressions of sympathy to us during our time of loss.

    Ken Hoyle

    Thank You

A simple "thank you" does not seem adequate to express my appreciation for my retirement reception in July. It was humbling to be honored in such a beautiful way, and I so enjoyed visiting with many of you who stopped by. A very special thanks to those who organized, prepared goodies, decorated and made sure all was just perfect - and it was.

I will always be grateful for your friendship and all the wonderful memories I will take with me. This college is such an important part of our community, so I will be eager to hear about the new things you are accomplishing, so keep up the good work!

I have definitely enjoyed the ride, and I will miss the frequent contacts with you. From my heart to all of you, thank you for being a part of my life, and love to all.
