CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!
Congratulations December Employee of the Month:
BJ Thompson
BJ Thompson greets everyone with a smile on her face, and remarkably so as she is interrupted at least a hundred times a day from the tasks she is doing at the front desk. If you can imagine trying to complete one task for the entire day and being taken off that task to answer a myriad of questions (often by students who are panicked about finding a book for a class), a person would eventually display oneself having a bad day. However, BJ approaches every challenge at the front desk with a smile. Often she has dropped things she was doing to make sure a student had what he or she needed to ensure their success in the classroom.
Students and staff are greeted with a warm smile and a cheery demeanor, but more importantly they are efficiently taken care of so they have the tools to be successful in their class. No request is too small and or too big as BJ finds resources that we don't have through our interlibrary loan system. How often have you been somewhere where you are told "We don't have that!". Not at CCCC, as BJ will find the resource and send you a note as to the day and time it is expected to arrive on campus so one can prepare in a timely manner a lecture, a lab or simply some holiday reading!
The library can be a very stressful place for students as they are trying to study or complete a project. However, BJ makes it a very enjoyable stress free learning experience!

- Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. I've been with CCCC for 13 years.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. I began taking classes at CCCC after the company I worked with moved from the U.S. While finishing my Office Systems degree, the Library Secretary position became available.
- Q. Describe what you do for CCCC.
- A. I catalog library materials, assist patrons at the circulation desk, process consortium interlibrary loans, serve as the local system administrator the catalog system, and whatever else comes along.
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. I was born in Sanford.
- Q. Where did you grow up?
- A. I grew up in Lee County in the Deep River Community.
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. Associate of Arts in Office Systems Technology (CCCC)

- A. I live on the Lee County/Moore County line just outside of Cameron.

- A. I have three children. My oldest son (Billy) is in the game design/simulation program at Sandhills Community College; Tony is a senior at Southern Lee and enrolled in the CCP program at CCCC; and Hunter is in his last year at Greenwood Elementary.
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. When I'm not at work, I enjoy spending time with my boys. I love to read, fish and watch football.
- Q. Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
- A. I truly love being a part of CCCC. We have the very best faculty, staff, students and community.

5th Annual TSWDB Awards Banquet
The 5th Annual Triangle South Workforce Development Board Awards Banquet was held on Dec. 7 at the Harnett Health Sciences Center in Lillington. Check out the TSWDB blog for more pictures and highlights of the event.

Excelling as a Supervisor
A celebration ceremony was held for Central Carolina Community College's 19 leaders who completed the college's Excelling as a Supervisor internal semester-long training program designed and facilitated by Valorie Benn (Associate Director of Human Resources), Trinity Faucett (Director of Human Resources), and Shirley Rijkse (CCCC Human Resource Management Instructor).

Leadership Harnett Graduates
Congratulations to Leadership Harnett graduates Mari-inetta Pavlic, Nena Dixon, and Lisa Godfrey.
Hooping For Relief
With support from the Central Carolina Community College family, 20 student volunteers from the CCCC Athletic Department, the Student Ambassadors, and the Men and Women of Academic Distinction and Excellence (MADE & WADE) were able to collect donations of several bags of clothing and toiletries, over 60 pounds of non-perishable food, and just under $150. These were donated to charities working directly with victims of Hurricane Matthew, including the Second Harvest Food Bank and Urban Ministries, during the Hooping for Relief event held on Nov. 4.
The event was an opportunity for the community to come together and assist victims in recovering from the unprecedented devastation while also enjoying food, exhibitions by the men's basketball team who have enjoyed a stellar season, and other family activities. One participant, Rasheed Jones, said, "I thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this relief event and I appreciate everyone for attending and helping to make it a success! I'm very proud of the way the student body came together for a common cause to support and raise awareness for those in our community and surrounding areas who were directly impacted by this disaster."
On behalf of the CCCC Athletic Department, the Student Ambassadors, and the Men and Women of Academic Distinction and Excellence, thank you for truly demonstrating and upholding the shared values of people and community here at CCCC!
Harnett Main Campus Student Learning Angel
In keeping with the holiday spirit, the Student Learning Team at the Harnett Main Campus collected gifts for their angel, a local child whose family could use some help from "Santa" to make this Christmas a little more cheerful. The Harnett Main Campus Student Learning staff chipped in with gifts large and small to make sure their "angel" would find some special packages on Christmas morning!
Assistance Gathering NCCCS Student Award Nominees
We need your assistance gathering our college's 2017 NCCCS student award nominees. We would like to ask for your help selecting the best of the best for the 2017 Academic Excellence Award- "The Great within the 58," Gov. Robert Scott Student Leadership Award, and the Dr. Dallas Herring Achievement Award.

CCCCAEOP Silent Auction
The Central Carolina Community College Association of Educational Office Professionals Silent Auction was held on Dec. 7. Items for the auction included crafts, homemade cookies, pies, cakes, breads, jewelry, Christmas items, and more. Proceeds fund our student scholarships!
News From The Library
Meet Our New Evening Librarian!
The Library welcomes Allison Sills as our new part-time Evening Librarian on the Lee Main Campus. Allison earned her Master's degree in Library Science at UNC-Chapel Hill, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English/Education at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. She previously worked at the Chapel Hill Public Library and also at Zayed University in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Her primary responsibilities will include evening library instruction, research assistance, assisting with LibGuides, archives support, library newsletter, brochures, programing, and displays. Her regular work hours will be 3 to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Stop by and give Allison a warm welcome!
New Reserve Request Process
Beginning Jan. 3, 2017, the library will have a new process for placing materials on reserve. There is a new electronic request form found in the Faculty section of the library web page under Reserve Materials. Completion of this new form will be required for each reserve request. Contact Tara Lucas at tlucas@cccc.edu or 919-718-7245 with any questions.
Accepting Book Order Requests
The library is still accepting book order requests from faculty and staff. Requests can be made online using the Library's Order Request Form, or by contacting Tara Lucas, Director of Library Services, for Chatham and Lee requests, or Jennifer Seagraves, Instruction & Outreach Librarian, for Harnett requests.

WHAT'S HAPPENING AROUND CCCC
New Outreach and Services Coordinator
Vincent O. Penn is the new full-time Outreach and Services Coordinator for Veterans Upward Bound. Vincent holds a Master's degree in Organizational Management and an undergraduate degree in Education with a focus in biology.
He has been working as a Financial Aid Advisor at Durham Tech Community College for the last nine years and has extensive experience with work study programs, scholarship eligibility, and disbursement, collecting and processing data in light of federal compliance. Prior to DTCC, Vincent spent two years as an academic advisor/coordinator for the TRIO/SSS program at Green River Community College in Washington state. To round out his experience, Vincent has years of experience working in employment assistance programs/positions (WorkFirst, WIA, Employment Security Dept.). Vincent was a captain in the U.S. Army and served for five years from 1985-1990. He currently resides in Durham.
Field Trip to Old Salem
The morning ESL program in Chatham county went on a field trip to Old Salem to learn about Colonial times in America between the 18th and 19th century. Students explored the village, interacted with costumed Moravian interpreters, and completed a history research project.
Chinese Activity Day
The Confucius Classroom and the Great Wall Society hosted a Chinese Activity Day on Dec. 7. Activities included lantern painting, rope jumping, paper cutting, hula hooping, and Chinese food. For more information on the Confucius Classroom, contact instructor Yuehan Ma at yma062@cccc.edu.
TRiO SSS/STEM Celebrates Student Achievements
On Friday, Dec. 2, CCCC's Student Support Services, Student Support Services STEM Health Sciences, traveled to the Durham Performance Arts Center to see the musical, "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."
This cultural event was a celebration for students in our program who had received Midterm Achievements and were passing all their courses with a C or higher. We invited over 40 students and were able to bring 12 students to the celebration.
Students were given certificates and ate dinner together. After dinner, the students settled in to watch the amazing performance filled with captivating musical numbers and elaborate costumes.

Welcome to Central Carolina Works
The Central Carolina Works team would like to welcome two new employees this month. Carolina (Cara) Simmons and Kelly Dorman started new positions as Career and College Advisors/Instructors in December.
Cara will succeed Patrick Kelly (who was recently elected to the Lee County Schools Board of Education - congratulations, Patrick!) as the advisor at Lee County High School. Cara has an extensive background in counseling and is currently pursuing her Ph.D. in General Psychology. She will teach PSY courses for the college in addition to her CCW duties at LCHS.
Kelly will be filling an existing advisor vacancy at Chatham Central High School. Kelly has been continuously employed at CCCC as an adjunct CJC instructor and is pursuing her Ph.D. in Forensic Psychology. Kelly will continue to teach for the college in addition to her CCW duties at CCHS.
CCW and the college as a whole are very excited about having new team members aboard! Welcome, Cara and Kelly!
SSS/ SSS STEM Attends East Carolina University
In October, Student Support Services and Student Support Services STEM Health Sciences traveled to East Carolina University in Greenville for a Transfer Tour. East Carolina offers 93 Bachelor degree programs and gave our students a hands-on experience to learn about all their university has to offer.
Students in our program were able to dine with other East Carolina students in West End Dining Hall before a private tour of the Pirate Academic Success Center with the Director Elizabeth Coghill. The Academic Success Center has an open concept allowing students to work in peer groups and collaborate with each other as they are tutored.
Our students finished their day with a transfer admission presentation and walking tour with two of East Carolina's current students where they could ask questions about anything from academics to dorm life.

Annual Winter Event
The Mentor Program within TRiO Student Support Services Classic and TRiO Student Support Services STEM-Health Science hosted their Annual Winter Event on Dec. 6. Mentors (staff within the CCCC Community) and Mentees (TRiO participants), enjoyed an event together focusing on the mentor relationship, goals and holiday fellowship.
Kim Brzozowski, TRiO Academic Coach, gave a presentation on Smart Goals, followed by a reflective activity by Megan Sherman, Student Success Advocate. Mentors and mentees created vision boards based on their goals for 2017 and their professional futures. Using their smart goal worksheets, everyone used composition notebooks to create a collage full of photos, quotes and motivational phases to create a vision board.
The Mentor Program within TRiO Student Support Services will meet again in January to present on professionalism and further goals for the mentor program. The Mentor Program will connect student participants with experienced professionals or accomplished peers.

Lorraine Whitaker's daughter, Jessica, and her husband welcomed their first child Friday, Dec. 9, and it was a boy! His name is Whitton David-Byrman Nickens. He weighed 8 lbs. 2 oz. and was 19-1/2 inches long. Everyone is wonderful and are staying with Lorraine thru Christmas. Merry Christmas to them all!

Bereavements
We sadly announce the passing of Denise Johnson's mother-in-law, Marjorie V. Johnson, 94, of Lillington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Neill's Creek Baptist Church, 4200 Neills Creek Road, Angier, NC 27501.
We regretfully inform you of the passing of Susan Johnson's grandfather, Cornelius McRay Hamilton, of Dunn, on Nov. 17. Mr. Hamilton was born Oct. 9, 1920, in Harnett County. We know that Susan would appreciate your thoughts and prayers at this time.
The holidays may make coping with the loss of a loved one particulary difficult. Your Employee Assistant Program is here to assist during any difficult time.
