CCCC EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH!
Congratulations November Employee of the Month:
Joel Oldham
Have you ever even wondered how many campuses we have? How much detail needs to be executed in order to simply mow the grass, trim the bushes, and pick up the debris that over 5,000 students deposit at each of our campuses? Joel Oldham is instrumental in making sure that all of the CCCC campuses are beautiful. His position as Landscape Supervisor is certainly one that is "cellophane thin" as he seeks to make sure everything looks appealing to students who attend our college. Just think if you arrive at an area that is not immediately appealing to the eye, you would probably think twice about going in. Even if you knew the instruction was great and the facilities were superior, the curb appeal has to be in place for students to feel comfortable entering our halls. Joel is responsible for our "curb appeal" and is a huge part of our recruiting effort!

- Q. How long have you worked for CCCC?
- A. This month will be 25 years since I have worked here at the college. I started in November of 1991.
- Q. What brought you to CCCC?
- A. I was working in Raleigh at the time and wanted to be closer to home when the grounds position here at the college became available.
- Q. Describe what you do for CCCC.
- A. I am the grounds and housekeeping supervisor.
- Q. Where were you born?
- A. I was born in Lee County and live in Chatham County.
- Q. Educational credentials?
- A. A.A.S. from Sandhills Community College in 1987.
- Q. Where do you live now?
- A. I have lived in Chatham County (Bear Creek) pretty much my whole life except for three years. I lived and worked in Northern Virginia, taking a job there after graduating from college.
- Q. Tell us about your family!
- A. I have a twin sister and an older brother.
- Q. What are some of your hobbies or other interest outside of CCCC?
- A. I like to fish and hunt, and I also raise beef cattle.
- Q. Anything else you'd like to share with the CCCC family?
- A. I also like to do taxidermy work in my shop at night.
WOW! WHAT A TEAM!
BreadBasket of Sanford
Each month, Veterans Upward Bound staff volunteer at the BreadBasket of Sanford. Amanda Parkstone prepped side dishes for lunch with veteran Brenda Blue. Kevin Hunt, from NCWorks, worked dish duty.

The Financial Aid Office decided what better way to retreat but to give back to the community. On Oct. 27, the financial aid staff volunteered at the BreadBasket of Sanford and fed those in need.
2016 Leadership Program
Congratulations to CCCC's Lisa Godfrey, Nena Dixon, and Mari-inetta Pavlic as graduates of the 2016 Leadership Harnett program.
FAFSA Day Success
We had a great turnout for FAFSA Day on Oct. 31. We assisted over 80 families in completing their 2017-2018 FAFSAs early. CCCC was ranked #3 in the state, from all community colleges and public universities, with the most registered attendees to this great event.
I want to thank all of you for helping us make FAFSA Day a success.
Super Smash Brothers Tournament
On Oct. 14, the CCCC Gaming Club held a Super Smash Brothers Tournament to benefit the Veterans Upward Bound fund. The event, which ran from 12 p.m. until 3 p.m. in the gym, was open to all students. For a $5 entry fee, students could participate in the tournament, in open gaming (with board games, cards games, or other video games available), or be a part of a Dungeons & Dragons campaign. Concessions were also available to purchase.
With Veterans Day right around the corner, we wanted to host an event that the students' would enjoy and that we could use to help out our student population of veterans.
On the same day, the CCCC Gaming Club kicked off its "Gifts from Gamers" campaign. Through the end of the semester, the club will be collecting new and gently used board games. At the end of the semester, the games will be donated to be distributed to children in need for Christmas. At the end of the day, the CCCC Gaming Club raised over $220 for the Veterans Upward Bound fund and collected several board games for the "Gifts from Gamers" campaign.

We Need Peer Leaders!
After a successful first semester with peer leaders assisting with new student orientation and in ACA courses, the College Success Center is in the process of recruiting peer leaders for NSO in summer 2017 and for the 2017-2018 academic year. We are looking for nominations from you! Do you work with any students that might be a good fit for this position? Edgar J. and Ethel B. Boone Adult & Community College Leadership Fellowship
On Nov. 14, Sarah Hoffarth was awarded the Edgar J. and Ethel B. Boone Adult & Community College Leadership Fellowship. Sarah was recognized as a first-year doctoral student who has demonstrated outstanding contribution to the practice of adult education. She is currently pursuing a PhD in Higher Education Administration at NC State University. Sarah is the Project Director for CCCC's First in the World Grant initiative.

CCCC Staff Member Visits D.C.!
Sarah Hoffarth represented Central Carolina Community College and the First in the World grant at The White House and the U.S. Department of Education's convening on November 15, Higher Education Innovation that Reduces Costs and Strengthens Quality. The convening was a time to spotlight and celebrate higher education innovation that has led to greater equity and student success, as well as sustain the momentum for this work. TRiO Student Support Services Travels to Charlotte
On Oct. 14, TRiO Student Support Services and Student Support Services STEM & Health Sciences participants traveled to Charlotte for a cultural trip. This trip gave our students an opportunity to gain some cultural capital, experience a new city, and practice problem solving and team building skills.
Students use the bus trip to Charlotte as an opportunity to study.
The first stop was Concord Mills Mall, where students visited the Sea Life Aquarium, had lunch together, and had a brief opportunity to explore. For some students, it was the first time they had seen sea creatures in person.

The next stop was Codescape, an escape room challenge. Students were separated into teams and locked in themed rooms. Teams had 60 minutes to solve a series of puzzles in order to escape their room and avoid an untimely fate! The "Deep Space" team was mere moments away from escaping before time ran out, while "The Residents" team needed a little more time.

All said, participants had a great time while learning a lot. One student summed it up best by saying, "I met new people with similar backgrounds; I also traveled to Charlotte for the first time and worked with a group of different ages to solve a problem not related to school or work. It was great!"
TRiO Student Support Services and Students Support Services STEM and Health Sciences are two Department of Education funded grant programs that provide specialized services for students who are low-income, first generation, or have a disability. News From The Library
College Archives Photos Digitized
The library recently had two boxes of photos from the College Archives digitized! These are now available online through the North Carolina Digital Heritage Center. Curriculum programs included in these first two boxes were automotive mechanics, broadcasting, business administration, cosmetology, and others.
The library has approximately 12,000 photos organized in 38 archival boxes that document CCCC’s history. More photos are now being digitized. This project will take several years to complete in partnership with the NC Digital Heritage Center. Samantha O’Connor, Public Services Librarian, has done a great job in organizing, inventorying, and describing these photos to prepare them for digitization and online access. New Reserve Request Process
Beginning in January 2017, the library will have a new process for placing materials on reserve. There is a new electronic request form found in the Faculty section of the library web page under Reserve Materials. Completion of this new form will be required for each reserve request. The new process and information supplied in the form will improve efficiency in managing library shelf space for reserve materials. All faculty should begin using the new reserve request form in the spring 2017 semester. Contact Tara Lucas at tlucas@cccc.edu or (919) 718-7245 with any questions.
New LibGuides Design Coming Soon
Librarians have been testing a new design for our LibGuides (online research guides) with students and faculty. Testing is now completed, and the new design will be rolled out next semester. The new layout will be more intuitive to navigate and will follow the research process. The ENG 111 guide will be the first research guide to be updated with the new design, with other guides to be updated during the semester. Accepting Book Order Requests
The library is still accepting book order requests from faculty and staff. Requests can be made online using the Library’s Order Request Form, or by contacting Tara Lucas, Director of Library Services, for Chatham and Lee requests, or Jennifer Seagraves, Instruction & Outreach Librarian, for Harnett requests. If you have any questions regarding book order requests, please refer to our Collection Development Policy and Guidelines.

West Harnett Center Giving 'Thanks' Tree
Students and staff worked together on a November project. This is the West Harnett Center Giving 'Thanks' Tree. Leaves were cut out of various colors of paper and everyone wrote something they are thankful for on the leaves. I then drew a tree with chalk markers and attached the paper leaves, along with real leaves, to the tree. It sparked great conversation and allowed the students creativity to shine through!
WIA Recognized for 2 Governor's Awards
The TSWDB was recognized for two Governor's Awards this year! Sampson County Board Member, Ret. Col. Edward Timmons, received the Outstanding State Government Service Award, and Harnett County WIOA participant, Sophia McLean, received the NCWorks Award of Distinction for Outstanding Teen. Bereavements
Sadly we inform you of the passing of Nicole Crissman's grandfather, J.R. Crissman, 89 whom pasted on Nov. 11. I know Nicole would appreciate your thoughts and prayers during this healing time.
We regretfully want to let everyone know of the passing of Jesse Ayers Jr. Jesse taught automotive from 1971 until 1996, 25 years. He passed away Oct. 28 at his home surrounded by his family after a brief battle with cancer. Condolences can be made at www.bridgescameronfuneralhome.com
