Congratulations May Employee of the Month: Talia Friday

Talia Friday is always looking for ways to help our students. I have witnessed Talia work with the Foundation and senior administrators to locate funds to help students find money so that they can enroll in classes and not have to leave college. Talia has also helped create and successfully supervised the development of the new STEM lab and has created student jobs in the process. This lab helps numerous students be successful in the areas of math, science, engineering, and technology. Talia has recently represented CCCC at the NC Tutoring and Learning Association State Conference in Pinehurst as she presented on "Perfect Partners: Tutoring and Mentoring". Talia also works one on one with students and helps tutor them in times of need, while continuing to perform her regular duties of supervising the AAC and testing. What impresses me the most is Talia's selflessness and passion to help students be successful.

I have worked at Central Carolina CC for 4 years. I had always heard many wonderful things about CCCC and wanting to be a part of such a supportive environment is what brought me to the college. It has been a fantastic experience!

I and my team are responsible for providing additional academic support for students. Students can contact Academic Assistance for arranging seated one-on-one or group tutoring sessions, assistance with Upswing distance tutoring, information on the STEM lab, or exam proctoring services. I am very proud of the free flowing exchange of ideas and constant innovation Academic Assistance demonstrates in order to keep up with students' needs.

I was born in Nevada. My family was a military family, so I had the opportunity to travel growing up. We lived in various places including California, Texas, and even Germany before calling North Carolina home. Even today, I am fortunate that family is never far away, so I spend most of my free time with them. I have my mother, Tina Higgs, and my sister, Captain Desiree Prince, to lean on for support, and I am incredibly grateful for that.

Third Bi-annual Food Drive for Communities in Schools and Buddy Backpacks

Last month the CCCC staff, faculty, and students again found a way to support those less fortunate in the local community.

The month of April marked the third food drive (occurring bi-annually in April and October) for two local organizations: Communities in Schools of Lee County (CIS) and Buddy Backpacks of Harnett County. Both organizations are non-profits which provide weekend backpacks to elementary and middle school students to fill the weekend gap for the neediest students receiving free breakfast/lunch at school.

This past year CIS served approximately 280 students in the Lee County primary schools, and the western Harnett area Buddy Backpacks served approximately 365 students. The program directors for both CIS in Lee and Buddy Backpacks in Harnett greatly appreciate the donations as well as the volunteer hours spent by CCCC students as part of their service learning.

I also personally want to thank everyone for your involvement with both of these great organizations. You have all had a strong positive impact on your community. New Director of College Success

I am pleased to announce Sarah Hoffarth as our new Director of College Success and Student Transitions/ACA Department Chair. Sarah attained her Bachelor's degree in Communication from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her Masters in Higher Education and Student Affairs from The Ohio State University. Sarah has over nine years of experience working in higher education and most recently served as Lead Success Coach here at CCCC. Sarah officially started in her new position in March. Thanks for joining me in congratulating Sarah on her new position.

Don Buie Memorial Endowment Scholarship

The Sanford Area Society of Shaggers (SASS) has donated $600 to the Central Carolina Community College Foundation for the Don Buie Memorial Endowment Scholarship. Graham Parker (left), SASS Vice President, presents the check to CCCC Foundation Executive Director Emily Hare. The CCCC Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization affiliated with, but independent of, the college. It receives donations of money and equipment on behalf of CCCC and uses them to promote the educational mission of the college and assist students through scholarships and grants. First Annual Chef Challenge

Anthony Crouch, of Sanford - with his pork barbecue macaroni and cheese - was the "Best in Show" winner of the inaugural Central Carolina Culinary Institute Chefs Challenge recently held on the Central Carolina Community College Lee County Campus. Fourteen different dishes were available for students, faculty, and staff who paid $7 to sample the offerings. "The Chefs Challenge was an event that allowed students to express themselves through their cooking," said Chef Regina Minter, Lead Culinary Instructor with the Central Carolina Culinary Institute.

Dr. Brian Merritt, CCCC Vice President of Student Learning, was among the faculty and staff members to sample the variety of dishes at the inaugural Central Carolina Culinary Institute Chefs Challenge.

15th Annual Furniture Auction

This beautiful furniture will be among the items up for bid at the Central Carolina Community College Foundation's 15th Annual Furniture Auction.

The CCCC Foundation continues its tradition of offering hand-made furniture and a variety of beautiful and useful items in wood and metal as it hosts its 15th Annual Furniture Auction.

The event starts at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 6. The items will be available for viewing in and outside of the Miriello Building Multipurpose Room on the college's Harnett County Campus, 1075 E. Cornelius Harnett Blvd. Bidding starts at 10 a.m. and will wrap up about noon.

The Auction is a great source for those seeking to purchase quality wood and metal work at auction prices while also making an impact on the future of the students at CCCC.

Proceeds from the Auction help to provide financial aid for Harnett County students at the college through an endowed scholarship fund managed by the CCCC Foundation. The proceeds also pay for materials used to produce the auction items, which are created by students in the college's carpentry and welding classes.

More than 50 pieces of handcrafted wood and metalwork, including lawn furniture, chests, jewelry boxes, utility buildings, yard decorations, and other items will be up for auction.

Professional Energy Manager (PEM) Certifications

Three Central Carolina Community College employees — (left to right) Ronnie Measamer, Danny Furr, and David Eric Butler — have received Professional Energy Manager (PEM) certification from the Institute of Energy Professionals. Measamer, Furr, and Butler completed 96 hours of instruction over a seven-month period through N.C. State University at Randolph Community College in Asheboro. After completion of the instruction, they had to successfully complete an examination to receive the PEM certification.

VA Rural Health Team

The Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) office heard from Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) student veterans and veterans in the CCCC community that they were experiencing difficulties accessing the Veteran Affairs medical centers (VA). Some of this difficulty came from the long distance to the regional VA hospitals in Durham and Fayetteville. CCCC campuses are located approximately equally far away from the regional VA hospitals so veterans may have to travel 40 miles or more to access care. The VUB program invited the Rural Health Team from the Fayetteville VA to Central Carolina Community College to try to help students gain access and overcome obstacles.

In March, the VA Rural Health Team, consisting of LaVondra Pye, Jeffery Thomas, and Derrell Lee was on the Sanford campus all morning assisting CCCC student veterans, VUB participants, and veterans from the community. The VA team was available to provide information on a number of topics, including general health issues, mental health options, the VA Choice card program, and enrollment in the VA. The most commonly sought help was with enrollment, speeding up the process to getting a first appointment, and options for seeing local health care providers through the VA Choice Card program.

To gather more information while registering at the event we asked veterans what other services they would like to see come to the CCCC campus. Our first step on following up on these ideas is the up-coming Veterans Health Fair on May 19, which was held on the CCCC campus in Lillington. In addition to hosting the VA rural health team from the Fayetteville VAMC, we also hosted the mental health team, Marcus Pickett and Ronald Thomas, from the Greensboro Mobile Vet Center. Moving forward we hope to continue a dialog with veterans at CCCC and in our community and coordinate services that meet their needs.

The Library Green Catchers

The Library Green Catchers team won the 2014 Central Carolina Community College Green Office Challenge. This is the second consecutive year that the Library Green Catchers won the challenge, which is organized around a checklist of sustainability initiatives to complete. The program's intent is to help college employees strengthen their commitment to respect and protect the environment through simple, everyday actions. In honor of their accomplishment, the Library Green Catchers were given a crepe myrtle tree to plant in front of the library on the CCCC Lee County Campus. The CCCC Educational Office Professionals and the CCCC Sustainability Committee sponsor the Green Office Challenge.

Upcoming Student Orientation Sessions

The College Success Center at Central Carolina Community College (CCCC) will host eight New Student Orientation sessions over the course of the summer in preparation for the fall 2015 semester. The New Student Orientation program hosts organized, purposeful, and positive introduction sessions for all new CCCC students and their families. These sessions help them become familiar with services and programs vital to their successful transition as full and active members of the CCCC community. Partnering collaboratively with other college offices and departments, these sessions help students gain the skills, information, and meaningful relationships important to successful long-term academic and personal outcomes. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to take placement tests and meet with an academic advisor to register for fall courses. CCCC will host orientation sessions on all three campuses.

Which Logo To Use?

An excerpt from the Branding Guide, Central Carolina Community College's Graphic Standards & Editorial Style

Wondering which logo you should use on a flyer or promotional material? Page 7 of the Branding Guide includes guidelines for using the CCCC logo.

The official logo of Central Carolina Community College is the primary visual/graphic identity for the college. This logo replaces any previously existing CCCC logos.

The logo consists of four stylized “C’s” and the college name as a word mark. The word mark should always being used in combination with the logo and the elements may not be used separately.

The official Central Carolina Community College logo should appear in a prominent position on all marketing and communication documents, including print and electronic.

Below the vertical and horizontal configurations are shown. Across all configurations, logo elements should not be changed. You may download accurately proportioned logos from the CCCC Intranet under the Marketing section.

What is not acceptable is to resize the logo so that it is out of proportion or distorted. Do you see the difference?

New Evening Library Assistant

The library staff welcomes Barbara Bera as our new part-time Evening Library Assistant. Barbara is a recent graduate of the Library and Information Technology program at CCCC. She completed her co-op work experience at the Lee Library in the Spring 2015 semester. Barbara also has an Associate in Science degree from Essex Community College in Maryland, as well as a certificate in early childhood development. If you stop by the library in the late afternoon or evening, please say hello to Barbara!

Library Password Change

The password for off-campus access to online databases has changed as of May 18. Please contact the library at 919-718-7244 for the new password if you did not receive it via email.

Summer Reading Program

The summer semester is officially here, and that means Summer Reading is right around the corner. Starting June 1, all faculty, staff, and students are invited to participate in our annual summer reading challenge. Stop by the Lee or Harnett campus libraries to sign up and create a summer reading goal for yourself. Participants who meet their goals will be rewarded!

Gladys is survived by four children, Margie Warnica and husband Gary, Sr. of Camp Verde, AZ, Roger Parker and wife Brenda of Spring Lake, Judy Parker of Lillington and Becky Parker Howington of Lillington; 11 grandchildren, 16 great grand children and 7 great great grandchildren.

Things For Sale, For Free Or For Adoption

Retired CCCC Marketing writer Kathy McDonald, and her husband, Tom, are enjoying the sunshine in California and are eager to sell their North Carolina home. It is located at 105 Ridge View Drive, The Highlands at Sherwood Forest, off Highway 27 in western Harnett County.
